Finding CD-ROM firmware version in XP...
OK... I darn well know that once upon a time you could get the firmware version of your CD-ROM's by looking in the Device Manager properties, but I can no longer find that info there in XP. Is it gone or am I dorking out? Anyone know where else you can find this info in XP? System Information maybe?

Couldn't find it either under System Information, Device Manager or Computer/Disk Management.
I guess Mac's suggestion is the easiest.
What about Belarc or Sandra?

Found it!
It is in System Information. Go to Components/CD-ROM/PNP Device ID. You'll see the model number of the drive followed by a LOOONNNNGGGGGGGGGG underline, followed by the firmware version.
It was far easier to find and far less cryptic when it was shown in the Device Manager properties. Thanks Microsoft!

Ha-ha .... eventually lol ....
There's some interesting property sheets hidden away here, if you follow Noo's navigation .... you get three tabs General, Device Information (where the firmware revision is hidden) AND security.
The Security bit is what interests me ... you'd seem to be able to restrict access to individual devices based on user types here. So is this a real simple way to stop people being able to install stuff via CDs in say a network .... ? Anybody fill me in on what 'Use', 'control' & 'modify' check boxes can or can't stop happening .... Looks promising but I don't have time to fathom it.
