    Question HP JetDirect connection issue

Bought a LaserJet 5Si Mx w/ JetDirect (J2552B). Installed HP TCP/IP port printer drivers on Win98 and the software saw the machine. I can ping the address and arp -a returned its IP along with the Ethernet address on the PCL config. test page.

However, I can't seem to telnet to it (either through port 23 or 9100). They are connected through a Linksys Cable/DSL router (don't know model #). When I go to print, after about a minute, I get back something about no connection to port.

I've tried to set the printer's gateway address to the router's near side IP address and the address of the JetDirect card itself (a little tidbit offered by HP's site).

Could the router be dropping return packets from filtering somehow? I was going to make a crossover and connect directly to the computer to test this theory out (didn't have time this morning), but I doubt that's the issue.

Could it be a configuration issue on the printer side?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Late post:
What are the DLC/LLC settings on JetDirect for? Do I have to have that enabled to print from windows on the LaserJet?

You might want to read up on Configuring TCP/IP Through the Front Control Panel. It has a lot of good basic info that you might be missing.

You might also try HP Install Network Printer Wizard, Discovery of Printers. It has two different options for "discovering" the printer.

Go here for the latest Win98 drivers & HP Resource Manager.

Also, notice the links at the bottom of the page for Manuals, etc. Your User's Guide and Paper Media Specs are available for download.

Let us know how it ends up...Good Luck!

EDIT: Go here for HP LaserJet 5Si and 5Si MX Printers - Microsoft (R) Windows Driver and Printing System Installation. It lists step-by-step procedures...

you should be able to set the ip address and any other network settings through the buttons on top..
if you print an information page from the printer.. it should give you the ip address that the jet direct has..
once you have the ip address you can change the settings from an internet browser... as long as you are in the same network as the printer you should be able to hit it... if not then just change ip address on computer to be in same network as jetdirect..
in the browser just type the ip address and you should be able to make the changes you need to the printer.. very simple

let me know how it went.

    good luck

Both of these replies talk about configuring TCP/IP through the front panel, but I've already done this. Since I can ping the JetDirect card from the computer, I can obviously talk to it, so there's nothing wrong with the IP portion.

I'll do some more checking on the HP printer wizard, but that seemed to setup fine also.

The HP Resource Manager and Printer Wizard should give you info from your PC side of the network.

Go here for EIO Basic Troubleshooting Steps. It tells you how to printout, and interpret, the JetDirect Configuration page.

Another idea might be to go to Control Panel/Printers...select your LaserJet, right-click on it, select Properties. Select the Details tab...Capture Port. This shoudl establish communications with the spooler and your printer.

    Fixed

Still don't know what was wrong, but after getting fed up, I did a cold reset and returned to the system's default settings. After that, everything worked fine.

    Thanks for everyone's advice
