SB 16 PnP Problem
I recently purchased numerous products to upgrade my computer, including a motherboard, CD-ROM drive, video card, modem, and processor. I also purchased Win98. However, since I didn't think it was necessary, and I wanted to save money, I didn't buy a new sound card, thinking my old SB 16 would be fine. I installed all the components myself, and <whew> everything worked perfectly, with one exception. The sound was terribly distorted. The actual clip plays, but every noise is followed by an odd scratching sound. I installed the latest drivers but the problem was not fixed. Therefore, before giving up and buying some ludicrously-priced SB Live that I don't really need anyway, I turn to this forum, which was recommended by a friend.

Don't buy an expensive sound card if you don't need one!! The lower priced sound cards from around $15.00 and up that are out there today are far better than the older soundblaster 16 cards. Technology keeps advancing, so the cheap items today are better than the expensive items of yesterday.
I would recommend though getting a slightly better card, go with the Soundblaster Ensonic 32bit PCI card. It is about mid range priced but works with everything including the newer internet phone programs etc..
