    Error When Renewing IP

    In the past 2 weeks I have had 7 PC's go down with the same problem. All of a sudden I lose my internet connection (using DSL) and any IP network connections, after a restart the computer takes forever to startup and if I go to the CMD prompt and run IPCONFIG /RELEASE rather than being given the expected addresses of 0.0.0.0 I still have a private IP address in there!! When I then run IPCONFIG /RENEW I get an error of

    "Windows IP Configuration
    An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket."

    I have found the cause of this to be a corrupt WINSOCK, the easiest fix was to restore the computer back to an earlier restore point however one of the PC's had this turned off because of an earlier virus, the way I fixed this was to delete the following Regkey's, and then imported new ones from a working PC.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock2

    Just thought I'd share this with everyone! Hope it helps someone.

    ahh thank you thank you thank you....I have sat here all damned day and short of formatting i have no answer....Im going to try your fix now...and if it works you get a big kiss....

    Uninstall your NIC, reboot, have it re-detected (or re-install drivers). Make sure you have the TCP/IP installed and IP assignment is via DHCP. I assume you have a WinXp there.

    what exactly are you using for 7 computers to give you the same problem ? is this at home or work ? using the same DSL modem, router, switch ? i think we need more feedback.. if it was one computer will be different, but it happened on 7 pcs.. definitely something wrong

    Heya....I'm not I'm still fartin around with it...I'm on win2k though and I tried those steps...I've tried everything now I think......maybe I will have to do the old format c after all...well I do only have 500mbs free on c so maybe its about time I freshened the load...Imma gonna keep trying all thse ideas though...sooner or later
