And here were are on modem #4

Well, I've got this interesting problem. I have tried 3 different 56k modems with a AMDK6-2/98SE/64RAM but they all exhibit the same problem. (2 were PCI, the third ISA)

The modem will dial in, but not send any data. Can't login or even look for new access numbers on any ISP. Now, I've checked all these modems and found them to be good. (Before and after)

Just out of pure frustration, I toss in a US Robotics 28.8 ISA Winmodem and it works. Bloody 'ell.

And this happened before and after a complete format/reinstall.

I have the modems here - the brand/type

Modem #1 (brand new Creative Brodexnt 56k)
    Modem #2 (Diamond 56k PCI)
    Modem #3 (Diamond ISA ISA)

    Any ideas?

And I couldn't ID the motherboard. All I could tell was that it was a Super Socket 7, flying with an Award BIOS.

    Doesn't matter much anymore, though.

maybe you need the chipset drivers installed. I had an old Socket 7 m/b that was like that...but if it doesn't matter anymore then oops

.... the first thing a modem does when connecting is a 'handshake' .... by the looks of your descriptions all three of your 'errant' modems are 56.6 .... but the working one is only 28.8 ....

Sounds like the phone line to me - too much noise!

When modems connect on 'dodgy' lines ... they switch down speed until they find something acceptable , a 56.6 modem will keep this up until somewhere's in the "40s", then give up, if you know how you can in fact discover this yourself using AT commands....

The signal strength, the 'loudness', of the connection is much better at slower speeds so you usually get a connection with them....

I'd be taking a known working modem round there & testing it increasing the speed incrementally until I knew for sure....

I dont know about modems giving up in the "40's" as I have had several 56k modems connect at 28.8 or lower. I get alot of 26.4 too. Of course I dont know what modems ive been using, and the modems that I do know are all US Robotics.

I should burst into a Tom Jones voice & start singing "its not unusual" !! ....

.... the giving up in the 40's bit depends on the ISP, it takes two to handshake ! ... yep dependant on the 'reciever' they may let you connect at any speed ....

BUT whatever speed you get below the rated speed of the modem is indicative of "noise" ..... ALL phone lines that I know of are capable of carrying a 56.6 signal .... it might be different in some banna republic somewhere's but as far as I know....

Haha.. yeah around the area I live I can get pretty good connections... but when I travel, its always a mixed bag. Im just thinking that by giving up in the 40's you would be angering all the customers with 33.6k and 28.8 modems. Im just guessing here though. I would be guessing more it has to do with his modem being compatible with is computer than anything else. Ive heard some odd stories where people can only get USR modems to work for them. Hmm...

Start > Setting > conrtol panel > internet options > connections > select connection > settings > properties > Server types > tcp/ip settings > make sure that its set to server assigned dns and ip

    Then if that doesnt work

Make sure you either have your cabs on hdd or have the windows cd and go to add remove programs > windows setup > remove the check from communications
    reboot
go back and add the check again
    reboot

That removes the comm files on your computer and replaces then with fresh ones from the cab files from the hdd or from the cd
