one of our guys is trying to get this damn thing setup on a customers netowrk through a hp jetdirect printserver.

Problem is is that the software for it will only recognise it on usb or parallel on the local machine, but the customer wants it networked so everyone in the office can use it. As luck would have it, we did not sell it to them, so no blame can fall on our heads for selling them the wrong product for their needs.

Has anyone ever toyed around with this fax/printer thing?

Answering your last question first: No. I have never toyed with one of these monsters.

I did notice that there are two versions of drivers available at their website. However, that was all I could find concerning that model.

As for the HP JetDirect printserver, there are a few differnt models to choose from. Also, notice the link there for Firmware Bundle for Windows.

thanks for the info. The drivers were pretty much all I could find regarding the printer as well. I did find a pdf for it though that contained a section on the network specs for it. basically it said it could hold about 100 doc's in its memory, had delay settings and gave the tx/rx speeds. pretty useless pdf.

well, we got in contact with ikon/canon and its official, the printer is a local printer only. It can not be networked.

Well that will teach them! How much did it cost them to find out they bought the wrong printer if you don't mind me asking?

not sure exactly, but ive seen it advertised for around $500US.

Install the printer drivers on each machine for LPT port, then add a standard TCP/IP port for the jetdirect. Finally change the printing port in the printer properties from LPT1 to the TCP/IP port... that should do it. It works in our company for few such printers...
BTW if you have a server used for printer sharing you can install the drivers on the server as well, have it print to the tcp/ip port, share the printer, and add the remote printer on the client machines. Then simply delete thle local printer from the client machines, the driver will remain installed since it is already in use.
