Half Screen Size Boot?
I was wondering I have a HP ze4115 laptop WinXP. When it boots, the WinXP boot screen, before loading the gui, is only half size. Is this a Windows issue or the laptop issue?
When the GUI loads the screen size is normal.

I've had quite a few laptops do that. The boot screen is about half sized. Nothing is cut off on the top or bottom, it's just small in the center.

Same here ! I was deeply puzzled for a while, then I stuck a 'real' dos boot disk in and watched it all come back to 'normal' size ... something in the pre-loading of xp, is using the 'wrong' screen size or fonts, I shouldn't worry if the GUI appears correctly ...

Don't worry about it. I think the boot screen for windows is normally 640*320 - on some lappy's it just uses that many pixels.

The 'native' resolution of your screen is probably something like 1024x768. Many laptops are set to force the display into that mode, so text doesn't look like you're drunk when you're looking at some other resolution.
Check BIOS setup for an option called something like 'stretch screen to fit'
I had to do that on my Toshiba to get Starcraft to use the full screen.

I am SURE it is a Windows issue because when I boot from my Knoppix CD (Linux on CD) it is full size in its boot screen. I looked in the BIOS and updated it also and there is no option.

Some older laptops have a key combo (Fn+F key) for display stretching, but I checked the service manual and it didn't have anything.

You sure Knoppix doesn't use 1024x768 during boot?

Well if it does, doesn't that mean that windows is the one not using the whole screen?

The LCD is a fixed screen size. When the graphic is displayed is is displayed in 640x480 it uses the center 640x480 pixels, unless the laptop is set to strech the image. It is not an error, just a bit annoying.

We have already established this as a possible windows issue. Read confused's post above.
