Power Failure on The Mavica MVC-FD7

I got this digital camera from a friend but it won't turn on. The batteries been charged and everything. I went to the sony tech support website and of course they were of no help. I really don't know what else to do besides taking it to a repair shop but I don't want to pay a huge amount of money for someone to do something that I could have done. I don't know if anyone here can help me or if this even the right forum for this problem but I'm willing to try anything to fix this.

Only thing I could suggest is to have the batteries checked. They may have been charged, but they may not hold their charge. Otherwise it is some physical problem with a switch, a loose connection or something of that order.

Certainly could be the battery, they can appear to take a charge (voltage comes up) but have no capacity under load.

If there is a fault in the camera, they don't lend themselves much to home repair, I'm afraid. There could be many causes, one straightforward one is that the master on-off switch itself is a bit prone to failure. Really the right thing to do is take it to a reputable repairer, but it won't be cheap...

(And a Mavica was a good camera but there are now many good, cheap hi-res digital cameras around)

If this is an older camera it used a sony battery and had a power cord that could be used to charge it.

Remove the battery. Plug the camera into the charger. If it does not turn on now (without the battery) it's hosed. if it does turn on it was the battery, replace it.

If you have one of the newer cameras that take AA batteries - try a couple duracells or energizers and if it doesn't turn on you're hosed.

Repairing a bad battery means buying a new battery. Repairing a camera at home. Well, there is no repairing a digital camera at home really. I don't think Sony is going to sell you replacement parts even if you do find out what's messed up.

It does take the rechargable battery which can go bad.

Do as I said above and try plugging it in and operating it without the battery and see if it works or not. the battery is replacable and can be found in many stores.

Otherwise unless you need the diskette to PC function and don't have the ability to use USB to transfer the photos to your computer, I would not do anything to repair it. It's got a submegapixel resolution which means not so nice photos. Let us know what you do.

EDIT 2:

Confused reminded me of something. The power on button on those is a pain in the butt. You have to hold the green button on the powerbutton in while sliding the power button. No idea why they made it like that....

... or perhaps you are as 'thick' as me .... I bought a cordless optical mouse yesterday ... complete with rechargeable batteries ... so fine last night then then charge ran out ... so I placed it in its little holder for 2 hours .. no joy ... scratched head a lot ... read mannuals !!! (very rare for me)... no joy ... then my seven year old picked it up ! ... hey presto it worked ... I had to press two buttons at once to turn it on ! ... not documented ! .... Ooooooo how silly am I ?
