Geezer
Right so after my post now, we can assume SFC shows no errors & that this system is virus free ... ? (You have to be 'real' clear with me !! )
What is/was this "been deep into MSDTC problem that emerged during all this. Cleared" - I take it we now have no problems with whatever it was ?!?! (Distributed Transaction Coordinator - so some OLE or sql or personal webserver issue)

Real clear here.
SFC will be run again this pm. I'm assuming clear but ISDN history long, problem more recent.
The MSDTC problem came during all of this yesterday and related to the MSDTC log file. Errors all over the shop (red cross will never be the same again - This now cleared and MSDTC starting. I think this likely to be side issue but will undoubtedly be proved wrong.
As I'd never heard of this until yesterday. limits of knowledge, I was somewhat taken aback. Google search found the answer, create new text file and save as ...
Back to the printers - still no joy.
Right I'm off to search for revised Isdn drivers before SFC.

Still not able to add printers.
Full system virus check clear.

Epson said there was something abnormal with Windows
Exactly what did the epson error message say?

I will try to re-install an Epson tomorrow, NooNoo. It was to the effect that Windows was "abnormal".
Further investigation has got me... nowhere.
Now this is confusing and makes no sense but I'll write it up anyway.
There is a link somewhere between the ISDN card and the printer issue. I've re-installed WinFax, the result is the errors that were triggered there have gone (I tried to install FinePrint, Printer drivers these would trigger a WinFax error in Event Viewer). The error was then replaced by an invalid security code error not since replicated. On restart the ISDN card had a problem, drivers need re-installing.
To be clear There have been problems installing Printers AND Printer drivers. Printers will not install, FinePrint I was upgrading.
(The only link and boy it is tenuos is that the ISDN card files that begin inpart fp... and so do fineprints)
it feels like a web and trhat I'm missing something obvious but what?

At this point in troubleshooting, I would normally uninstall and remove all hardware and software apparently related to the problem, check the registry for leftover keys, check the program files folder for leftover folders/files and then start again. Since it's the printers that are giving you the most grief, I would start with installing the epson first and so on.

'Spooler' service is started ? It won't let you install anything otherwise .... I think ....
What is a "Spooler" service?

It spools the file to the printer. The printer cannot cope with the entire file at once (mostly) so it feeds the file in a stream to the printer. This is what the spooler service does, kind of like a spool of tape being fed past a tape head.
