Xp Pro - Me - 98se

I have three PC's networked together sharing an ADSL line.
All three PC's are able to access the internet and email with no problem but I can't get them all to speak to each other.

The windows ME machine has the ADSL line installed and
each machine has an IP address set.

When I go into Network Neighborhood the W98SE and ME machines can see each others files without any problem. Neither machine can see the XP PRO machine. The XP PRO machine can see the ME machine but not the W98SE machine.

I have removed all the network components from each machine and reloaded them all but whatever I do the result is always the same.

The network setup is as follows (W98SE and ME):

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adaptor
Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC
NetBEUI - Dial-Up Adaptor
NetBEUI - Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC
TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adaptor
TCP/IP - Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks

Primary Network Login is Client for Microsoft Networks.

I used the wizard under XP PRO to setup the network. I even created the floppy disk but still nothing works.

Anybody got any ideas?

P.S. The windows XP PRO machine has a problem with the registration code and therefore does not have service pack 1 installed as yet. I assume this makes no difference!!!!!

See if XP has it's firewall function turned on. Also, turn off Simple Sharing of files so you can use the normal security and sharing features.

If there is a firewall on any machine make sure they have a trust with the IP of the other machines.

I'm assuming the IP's are all on the same subnet - like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, etc.

Try to ping the machine. No reply means a firewall or something else is preventing comunication at all. If you ping it try to connect using UNC - \\machinename or IP\c$ and this will get you to the C drive of the machine you connect to if you have the right logon and password.

I have tried IP\c$ but it comes back with 'The system cannot find the path specified'

computername\c$ is an administrative share...more than likely the problem is as simple as enabling the guest account...without doing this, you won't get a prompt to enter the username and password to access the XP machine. Try it out...

I never enabled the guest account on my XP machines and had no issues getting to them. Dunno. I always used the same account on all of my home machines and never had an issue but give it a shot nonetheless.

The simple file sharing option is in the folders options section - last option. Honestly it's going to controll how other machines connect to the XP machine and not the other way.


If you can ping from XP, you are connected. Can you ping the XP machine from The others?

Make sure to use the \\ before the computername or the ip. Ex. \\mypc\c$

When you say the firewall is turned off on XP you mean the built in firewall and not something extra like zone alarm right?

Make sure there is no firewall on the 98 machine or it trusts the XP machine.

Question - how are the machines connected? Hub?

You may have an issue where no machine is electing to be the master browser. In a serverless domain/workgroup a single PC will elect itself master browser. Oddly one thing you can do is just leave all of them on for a few hours and eventually they may just see each other. Sounds odd but once in a while it works.

Well they are finally working.

I left them all for 3 hours and when I came back they could all see each other.

I just hope that when they are all turned off it does not take another 3 hours for them to work!!!!!

Isn't that someting to do with Browse Master? I had the same problem with WIN98 SE and W2k SP3.

I'm not sure what I did to correct how I couldn't see the W2k machine from my WIN98 machine...

Network Neighbourhood / My network places takes at least 12 minutes to update. Just because you cannot see the computers in network place, doesn't mean it's not working.

If you can map a drive using \\computername\sharename then the network is working.
