    Exclamation AC97 on board audio. PROBLEMS!!!!

    Need some help here. I have an onboard audio card, built in. All I can find out about it is it's AC97. Win98SE will not detect it, instead it detects a PCI audio Device Which I do not have, the system cd that game with the pc does not the drivers on it. The manual says the check the jumpers and then check the BIOS, the pic of the mommy board is incorrect, and the options it says to check for in the BIOS do not exist. Recently it was playing cd's, mp3's and Wav's and NOT games sounds (diabloII, starcraft Expansion) then all the sudden it won't play Mp3's, Cd's or Wav's...
    I have tried using a soundblaster or compatible driver, but that didn't work.
    Help plz....
    one lost college student.

    The PCI Audio Device your system is reporting is the AC97 (if you've properly identified your chipset). Because you haven't installed the AC97 drivers, Windows just doesn't know how to identify the generic device it has listed.

    In your first post you state:
    All I can find out about it is it's AC97.
    Where did you get that information?

    I don't believe "Micro ATX" is a brand name but a design style. When you first turn on the computer there is some info at the bottom of the first screen while the memory test is running. That is the BIOS info. If you can post that we can help you identify the board's manufacturer.

    It would seem that the cd for the mb isn't available. Download ctbios from motherboards.org, find out what mb it is, then get the chipset drivers. Takes some time.

    Thumbs up

    All ok now, I found the driver thanks pps!! ctbios program helped out alot, it gave me the web page for the mommy board. it seemed to be the same one as the cd had that didn't work, so that is odd. only thing now is it won't play windows media player sounds. video yes, no sound. Games are good, wav's and mp3's also AOK!
    windows media player error:::
    Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. (Error=80040256)
