MIDI USB / Win ME Woes
I just installed a new motherboard and I'm having trouble getting my USB MIDI interface (MIDIMAN 2x2) to work on my Win ME PC. I know the actual MIDI box, cable and drivers work because they work in another machine with Win ME also installed on it, I know that USB in THIS machine works because other devices work on it (and YES, I DID disconnect everything from USB but the MIDI box). This machine also recognizes the device when I plug it in and loads the correct drivers, and the device in the hardware profile says it's working correctly (and I have no IRQ conflicts). I have all the latest drivers / updates. This device also work 100% with my old motherboard in the same box.
So, this must be a software / MIDI setup problem. I checked that this device was selected in the "sound / multimedia" setup and that the system MIDI volume was turned up. I made sure the connections to my midi device were correct and that it played sounds from another midi controller source. If I switch to the internal MIDI sounds on my SoundBlaster Live, it works correctly. I just can't get that darn USB midi interface to work.
Any ideas what this could be? Please help!!

What kind of motherboard? I had some problems like this with an AZ11 from FIC and it is fixed by getting the bios update

I'm embarassed to suggest something so extremely obvious, but have you tried swapping the MIDI in/out cables? Many an experienced MIDI muso has made this elementary error, myself included (and I don't claim to be experienced!).

I connected the MIDI-OUT cable from the MIDIMAN box directly to the MIDI-IN in my synthesizer, so I know it's correct. I'm also sure the MIDI cable itself works.
I have a Abit SA6R (815E based) motherboard with the latest bios updates and drivers. This board has a built-in MIDI connector, which I DISABLED, but maybe it has something to do with that (Hmm....maybe I'll try enabling it and seeing if I get any MIDI coming out of IT).

I fixed it!
I had to MANUALLY remove all the inf, vxd, drv and dll files and then have Win ME find it again. I assume one of them was corrupted since I replaced them with the same version. Just deleting the device from the hardware profile and letting WinME replace the drivers did not work. Nor reinstalling from the original disk. I guess if the files have the same name and date, they do not get overwriiten. SOMETHING TO ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND!!
Thanks,
Tony
