Do you mean that it won't go on standby when you click the standby button, or it will not go on standby when you set the power management timer for standby?

The first thing I'd check would be to see if the standby is disabled in the bios. (if the bios has a standby control)

    when you click standby...
if in internet options, connection tab, always dial is selected then the computer will standby as normal. if either of the others are selected (never dial and dial when network not present) then the computer pops an error message saying something like 'a device or program is preventing the computer from going on standby' if necessary, will write down exact message and post it tomorrow, but its something like that.

anyway, this doesnt seem sensible to me. the computer concerned is currently on a network without a domain, and ideally wants to remain this way - but this shouldnt affect standby, surely??

    hmmm.....

This sounds like a settings problem. Unfortunately I don't know enough about your software or hardware to advise you properly.

I guess the first question I would ask is why you need it to go on standby? Can you just turn it off? Also if the standby timer works, can't you just set it for a particular time and forget it?

Sorry I can't be of more help...?

So NO modem ? connecting to internet via lan ? .... would suggest that the nic driver is the beastie to blame ...

Something in the nic driver isn't right or windoze can't 'explain' itself properly ....

If the machine was in standby the nic would have to be able to 'wake' the machine, usually there's an option in bios which says something like 'allow this device to wake machine from standby' - this'll need to be on & any appropriate fly lead fitted from the nic to the motherboard, not all nics support this or motherboards , when you leave 'dial' selected windoze says 'oh so a modem can do that' & allows the shutoff .... leave either of the others selected & windows goes away & queries the NIC via bios to see whether the NIC can wake the machine, then it comes back with this 'pants' error when it realises that the NIC won't support it anyway, so it decides you want the machine on just to be sure ...
