hp xw4100 workstation $649

Not sure if this is a good deal or not, but I'm interested in people's thoughts. After you upgrade the memory ($114 for 512mb non-ecc), video ($126 for quadro4 380xl 64mb), and cpu ($25 for 2.4 w/ HT & 800 fsb) you're up to $914. Then you've got HP's shipping charges and sales tax for another $130 or so.
I know I should build from scratch, but who has the time. Although I wouldn't touch a pavillion, I've been favorably impressed w/ the stability of the corporate level hp (not compaq) products.

It didn't say what the bus speed was...and what is with the 128 MB of RAM? Should be 512 for that price.
As far as there being no monitor, that is normal.
Big plus: that thing has 3-year next business day onsite support warrantee. Plus XP pro as opposed to home...That seems a fair deal...but the upgrade cost to 512 MB does make it less lucrative, add $114...
The more I look at it, it doesn’t seem that good.

Oh, and look at the CDRW upgrade price...$79. Who are they kidding. $79 to upgrade to a CDRW...That is robery!

System bus is 800mhz. The 512mb for $114 is ddr333 pc2700 non-ecc, although its 4x128, which eats all the slots. Could probably eliminate that and buy the memory from crucial (ddr400 pc3200 non-ecc 2x256 for $110).
Don't really care about the cdrw, as I have one to pop in.

Does it hyper-thread? The add says Hyper-powered, but I hate to just assume that is what they meant.
If it is a hyper-threader, and you already know to get your mem from a different source, the price isn’t really that bad. Plus, three-year warrantee says it all!

The base cpu is 2.4 w/ 533 fsb non-ht. The upgrade to 2.4 w/ 800 fsb + ht is $25.

Do you want my honest opinion?
Well here it is anyway...
You could price out a system at NewEgg, with a nicer case, Asus P4P800Delux MoBo (hyper thread a 2.4 P4), with a better video card, more RAM, and RAID 1 two 120 gig drives for $1000 out the door. That is with a CDRW, and a DVD, and a $100 case. Price around you could probably get all of the parts for 900, with the XP Pro OEM License.
Do yourself a favor, price out www.newegg.com , and price out this HP with shipping, tax, and all of the things you need to upgrade. The only advantage you will have is the warrantee. But with quality parts you won't ever really need a warrantee..
