Major power outage in the NY area

Can you imagine it?

Some people have been wothout air conditioning, refrigerators/freezers, street lights and, it hurts just to say it, ...

NO INTERNET ACCESS!!!!

Some of my ISP's servers are down in Toronto and Ottawa, so I assume that Matridom, MacGyver and Danimal are having romantic candlelit dinners with their SO these days. Hang in there guys (if you can read this

).

Reports indicate that power should become fully available on Monday.

LIES!!!!

I had a laptop and dial-up, i was able to get updates all night long, i just did not stay connected the entire time.. power just got restored here an hour ago.. Toronto came back online in the morning.

Sympatico Dial-up servers where still running, the entire time.

BTW, i have a propane burning and some small tanks stored for just such an occasion, so i got my hot coffee this morning and a hot supper last night with a nice sunset.. The stars where nice to watch also.

I wonder if there will be a baby boom up there in about 9 months....

We had a similar situation here about 10 years ago, and 9 months later the birth rate went up signifigantly....

True, but there must have been issues with the DNS and web servers, as my personal website was offline (still is), and even though I remained connected, I couldn't surf anywhere for the past 20 minutes. This is the first time I've ever had problems with Sympatico since 1997, BTW.

Glad to hear you didn't have to suffer too much.

I got to cnn.com and canada.com without any issues, and i could connect to the chat here also (i had other people looking for info for me)

But web surfing was impossible about 15 minutes ago still, and this has happened twice in the last 24 hours.

Doesn't usually last long, though.

I live in Westchester 40 miles north of NYC and commute by train to Manhattan. I and three of my coworkers who also live in Westchester ended up sleeping on couches in the office last night because there were no trains, the buses were packed like sardine cans, and it was near impossible to get a ride. We were lucky, as many people ended up sleeping on the street.

The spouse of one of my coworkers drove into Manhattan at 7AM this morning to pick us up (no traffic into Manhattan was allowed last night). Got home to find that the power, which had been restored to my house last night, had been cut again at 9:30 this AM. Didn't come back on until 4 PM.

From the local news reports, much of NYC is still without power and there is virtually no train service.

I was actually half-way between Montreal and Ottawa with my wife and brother when the outage occurred. We didn't realize it until we left the freeway and hit the second dead traffic light. Then we turned on the radio and heard the news. We would have turned around and went back to Montreal to wait out the blackout, except that we have a cat that needs to be looked after.

It took us an hour to get home on what would normally be a 10-minute drive.

When we got home, there was no power and the power did not come back on until 12:30 pm the next day. The power had remained on since then, but we have been warned to expect rolling blackouts all this weekend with no notice. Power has been restored to 99% of customers, however there is still not enough power being generated to satisfy regular demand. So conservation is the order of the day.

The city of Ottawa has emergency power for their water treatment plants and pumps, so there was plenty of water. Hot water ran out quickly as the gas-fired boilers in our apartment can't operate without electricity to control them.

Since Quebec is on a different power grid and was unaffected, suddenly the city of Gatineau on the other side of the Ottawa river became an oasis for Ontarians in the dark.

The premier of Ontario declared a state of emergency on Thursday evening, and asked that all non-essential workers stay home for the day.

Thanks to thermometers I installed in the fridge and freezer, we were able to monitor the temperatures. We did lose all the perishables in the fridge as the temperature was up to 15C by the time power came back on, but the freezer contents managed to stay below freezing.

The crazy thing is, my brother is visiting us for the week and he lives in Kamloops BC. He went from one state of emergency in BC to another here in Ontario!

Last night, the power came back on however since meat was scarce, we went over to Gatineau to get us some protein!

I'm sure this power outage have reminded folks just what it was like before electricity was even invented and used.

We really take it for granted. Good thing I live out in the prairies.
