My computer won't shut down
I can't get the computer to properly shut down. It doens't say it is safe to shut off and doesn't go blank.

I take it this is the same machine in your other post No sound after WIN98 install ? ... so welcome to Windrivers & I'd say the two things are related !
But I'll take your name into account ... so we need to know some more stuff rather than the two symptoms so far .. (it'll be best too if we try & keep all your problems on the same thread)
Just confirm that the two things are on the same 'beast' & if you can the specifications of that ....

Same thread no sound/no shutdown
The two threads I posted are for the same computer. Thanks for the response and for helping. I tried tools-advanced-play sound and the box was already checked.
What specs do you need? I have a friend who was trying to clear up some space for me on my c drive and erased a bunch of things. I am sure it is related to that, but don't have a clue what to do. Thanks.

Am I right in thinking that your problems started after your "friend" cleared up some space on your hard drive? Do they know what they deleted??

If I used the phrase "chipset patch" would you or your friend know what the hell I was on about ?
Can we just have the entire tale ? So far I think you've formatted & tried a complete re-install of windows 98 & now stuff doesn't work properly ?? (tell us just how you got to this 'predicament' - don't worry about 'extra' info, the more the better)
The specs I want are the details of your computer so especially processor & motherboard & since your soundcard doesn't want to work either, that if you know it (if its a pre-built machine the make & model) ... knowing what bits are there will help us to pin down just what extra you need to tell windows about.
Don't panic this just sounds like windows 98 didn't quite recognise all the bits in your computer, once we know we can identify the extra proggies you need to download & run to fix it up

I've seen Windows 98 hang on exit if it is having problems with the sound associated with Exit Windows.
Go to Control Panel (Start-Settings-Control Panel) and run Sounds.
Look for the Exit Windows under the sound events and set that to none.
