a bit of a networking problem
i have 2 computers one a desktop and one a laptop they are both running windows xp pro w/sp1 or sp1a. the laptop is from my college and is set to logon a domain, ie the schools network so it will connect to their network drives etc. and my tower at home is part of a workgroup. now i put a wirless router in at home and a wireless nic in the laptop and the desktop is hardwired, the internet works fine on both machines but i cannot figure out how to share folders and printers from the desktop to the laptop. the file and printer sharing is all set up on both ends or appears to be, only problem i cannot really change the network setup of the laptop. any ideas????

Hi,
First of all can you ping from one machine to another (either by IP or Name)?
If yes,
you can always get the share working on IP based - Example:
from command prompt:
Code:
net use x: \\192.168.0.128\share
if you don't have ping - you probably misconfigured TCP/IP (either subnet or IP).
Cheers,
Gabriel

Having a 2k domain at home, with workstations as a member, then with the DC off line and using Internet connection sharing successfully from the workstation to any other PC’s, I find that there is still a lot of issue with sharing files between an XP pro PC in a workgroup, with the PC that is the member of the domain, which I think almost emulates your situation. I actually find it easier to attach the Workgroup PC to the Domain PC’s shares. After logging in (to the share) I can even manage the PC with the cached credentials. But going the other way, from Domain PC to Workgroup PC, I find it very harrowing. I don’t do this frequently enough to put a lot of effort into finding the best way to go the other way, which I think is what you are looking for. I usually find the quickest solution when working on someone else’s PC, get it in and get it out. Wish I could help~Good luck!

Check for a firewall running on the laptop. I have seen this kind of problem due to restrictions for incoming/outgoing addresses that are allowed to perform networking functions. Also a misconfigured firewall on your PC might cause the same problem.
If you really need to change your laptop's configuration there are tools that can help you get the cached admin password

set the workgroup name of the home PC to the name of the domain that you use at your school.
On the laptop, create a second profile for when you are at home, you should have the option to logon localy, do so and the domain options will be turned off. you should then in essence be on the same workgroup and be able to share without any issues.
Also, always remember to NEVER EVER EVER use network neighbourhood (or "my network places") to trouble shoot your workgroup issues.
ALWAYS use \\computername\sharename or \\ip address\sharename

You said it was XP pro right... why dont you just go to the users tab change the way it logs on to classic then when you log on you can choose wether you want to log on locally to the machine itself or the DOMAIN... all you would have to do is just set up the local one to use the workgroup and the other for the domain... piece of cake... i used to do it all the time..

Matridome gave good advice. Then make sure you have matching username/pasword combo's on both machines and from the dos prompt run the net use command to test connectivity. As someone else posted use the IP address to verify a connection.
Additionally the suggestion to use an alternate logon is not bad but I would bet your mail is already setup under another profile which you prefer not to recreate.
This is not a difficult situation. Just match everything except one machine is in a domain and one is in a workgroup. As long as the usernames/passwords match you will be able to share files without specifying username/password. Otherwise you can simply specifiy the username and password even on the net use command line.
Also as suggested check ICF or turn it off. (Internet Connection Firewall). It should not affect local IPs though.
Do not minimize your security for anything or you'll be hacked and sorry.
Good luck
