Busy system?

thanks for all the good advice,but lately i have been getting the blue screen saying the system is busy or has become unstable.When i use alt+ctrl+del keys, the box that shows all
the programs running.Says" explorer not responding" highlighted.What does this mean?

My all that windows vs linux stuff was oh so relevant - NOT !.... guys if you want to argue about the merits of one o/s vs another, start your own thread please ! .. this ones about windows 98 ...

So we have up to date anti-vrus ? We have all the ms patches ? & we have tried some anti -trojan s/w ? & you tried orangeman's 'trick' about unchecking startup items ?

If all that checks out, perhaps try an in-place re-install ? You simply re-install windows over itself ... this should leave all your installed proggies intact & unaffected, but 'badly behaved' apps might need re-installing, as will any windows updates (they ought to be stored on your machine so that's just a re-tard when you press the visit windows update site)

Explorer, as opposed to Internet explorer, failing to start is indicative of some hardware or driver problem rather than anything more malevolent but its worth checking for any 'net nasties' you might have caught ....

Can we have the full BSOD's (blue screen of death ) message, please, there ought to be more than you identified in the opening post, this'll give us more info, saying explorer won't start is like saying my car won't start - obviously there can be a fair few causes ....

Thanks for the flame I guess that I could have used that NEP. I had totally forgot about this post and I just checked it today. It is nice to see that some ¡§live in moms basement Linux loser¡¨ (notice I did not say Linux fanatic. I am not fanatical about anything I am only fanatical about Genetically-engineered hotties that crave sex 24x7, fast Cars, Booze and Computers) can cause such controversy amongst such distinguished minds of might. With that said I must apologize to rtrottie, Orangeman, NooNoo, hopr and confus-ed. The first half of my post was to clear up an earlier post from NooNoo this way rtrottie would not try to fix something that could not possibly affect his/her system. The rest of my post was just for fun that added nothing to the subject at hand. Its sad to see that someone can not add a little rivalry to this forum. Just a little history on me I do work in the IT field and I don't mean CompUsa, frys or something like that.. I am an admin for a fairly large company I have been doing it for quite some time now. Here we have a very mixed environment that includes Novell, GroupWise, Cirix and MS products. Note no Linux. Nepatec I am sorry that a few months into your project you nearly lost everything after you discovered a buffer overflow that allowed your entire messaging system to be compromised.¨ No operating system is perfect, your right on that. But horde is not part of Linux, it's a third party open source software. someone added on and took time to configure most likely with another add on program called imp, which is a web-based email program. Your issue with horde has more to do with substandard security policies rather than any deficiency in open source software. Open and closed source software will have bugs. Since horde is email software, you must have set it up to be accessed by the world-wide-internet and then failed to keep it patched, just like all the windows users who failed to patch their computers which would have prevented the Blaster problem. In your case with horde, failure on your part to patch horde, led to the email server being compromised (I have never had that problem here at work on my network) Not only was the lesson learned that EVERY O/S can be compromised but that you need to do your homework and find things like that out before hand and patch them in your roll out. Maybe WHEN YOU get a little experience under your belt in the real world and move out of Moms and Dads mobile home you will figure that out, but in the mean time you can always get help in these forums from loser nobodies like YOU, ME and Spdycml . I will be the first one to admit that Linux is not quite there just yet but that is what is so great about being someone like me a FREE THINKER a person unlike your self and Spdycml. A person that has not been beaten into submission by companies like Microsoft, Novell or Citrix. A person that likes to tinker around with OTHER O/S's and be part of a community that is bigger than himself, that wants nothing more than the furtherance of its O/S and Technology as a whole. No Spdycml I can not get my Linux friends together and make a better OS that is not my intent I just want to enrich the prosperity of the community.

There are a few viruses out there that can cause a corrupt explorer.exe file, or install two different versions of explorer.exe. I remember one that was a variant of a worm and a macro file that was especially nasty for a while. So..to reiterate the suggestions of Confus-ed, Orangeman, NooNoo et al:
run an online virus scan if you can keep it running long enough

run a spyware check..I use both ad-aware and spybot

uncheck all the things from start-up and reboot

run system file check and replace anything it finds as corrupt

do an overlay install of windows.

run a memory check and a hard drive check (from dos)
