Network works but I can't Ping!!!
Hi Gang
I have a client server network in a clients office that has Winproxy installed on one of the workstations for internet access. The workstations are Windows 98 and the server is NT4.0. The systems all have static IP address in the
192.168.1.XXX range with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
Everything works great with the exception of one workstation. Lets call it workstation "A". All the other workstations are able to surf the net, receive email, and log onto the server.
Work station "A" can log onto the server and run the office management software with no problem. I can see all the other workstations in Network Neighborhood. I can browse the other workstations from Network Neighborhood but I cannot connect to the internet thru the proxy. Here is the really weird part.............I cannot ping any of the other workstations from DOS but I can browse them in Windows!!! Furthermore, the other work stations cannot browse workstation "A". It is shared but is not available to the network.
I have changed ports on the switch, I have installed several different nic cards, I have reconfigured Winproxy, I have tried different patch cables. I'm stuck as to why I can't ping other machines from this one, yet I am able to log onto the server.......
Any ideas.............thanks in advance.

Reinstall TCP/IP. All the services you've mentioned that work all run on netbios. TCP/IP is mucked by the sounds of it.

Remove TCP/IP, reboot the computer. Reinstall TCP/IP then reboot the computer yet again.
Removing the nic and letting windows redetect it will not reinstall the TCP/IP stack.

Thanks for the reply peterpam................yes, the settings are all exactly the same and the problem continues on. I'm thinking that something in the operating system must be messed up. My laptop connects perfectly from that office to it must be in Windows. I'm going to try a load over and see what happens.
Thanks again!!
