old refresh rate problem again...

hey....

i just bought and installed a geforce2 mx400.
i'm running win xp and the latest driver from nvidia's site (28.32).

direct3d games default to 75hz (alien Vs predator 2)
opengl games default to 60hz (soldier of fortune,jedi knight II,return to castle wolfenstein )

I'm new to nvidia....i used to have a voodoo.
is there a fix ????

i know about the NVidia Refresh Rate Fix utility but according to the author it Doesn't work with the 27.41 and newer drivers.

help....please..

well the most obvious answer would be to see if you can track down earlier stable detonator drivers that the refresh rate fix works with. That shouldn't be too terribly hard as nvidia leaked drivers are everywhere on the net. Perhaps another member has a link to earlier drivers. I know there are pages out there (used to use them all the time, when I had a geforce)

as far as which are stable and which are buggy, I don't know. I'm sure some searching on groups.google.com for the specific driver version could give you some idea though.

For direct 3d, go to start>run> then type DXDIAG and then go to advanced and then refresh rate override.

You need this program: <a href="http://www.planetquake.com/ztn/nvreffix/" target="_blank">nVidia Refresh Rate Fix</a> - this allows you to set the refresh rate for all resolutions in one shot under Windows 2000 or XP. However, this program only supports driver versions before 27.42. So if you want to use it, you will have to find and use some older drivers.

hmmmmm.....i'm using driver ver 28.32 , so i can't use the refresh rate fix utility.
the problem is more in opengl because these games drop to 60Hz.
Direct3D drop to 75Hz which is fine (I did not touch the dxdiag and the settings are left as default)

example if you use 1200x1600 and your default refresh is 75hz then set it at that. Remember if you set it too high then force your monitor to run at that rate when using a higher resolution you could damage your monitor, if you can even see the display.

I've been referring to that site for a few years now as IMO it's about the best for info, utilities and drivers. It almost faded into 3D history when the hosts of the site went belly up late last year and the creator of the site felt he could spend his time doing other things rather than on the site, but I guess his large and loyal following convinced him to come back, much to our gratefulness.

Other than that, everything about the utilities and issues stated by others above is right on and more info available at Guru3D, as well as the fixed and unfixed version of that driver =P
