LG: Good or bad?

Hi, I may get a DVD writer and there is an LG that also does DVD RAM is $200 CAD.

Something tells me LG is a cheap "noname" brand, am I wrong? Are their products well made or will it break after a short period?

IMO, LG rates in just behing Plextor and/or Yamaha for overall quality.

I have both a CD burner and DVD drive from them and love them.

Anyone who asks me for an inexpensive but high power CD/DVD drive or burner gets the same answer from me: LG.

LG so far for me has been cheap and reliable - frankly at that price if it dies the day after the warranty goes out, then you can get another one.

This is a good question.

LG seems to be one of those manufacturer's who have come far quality wise.
Late 90's I thought they were crap.
Ditto, LiteOn.
But now I own a LiteOn CDRW.
These things seem to go in cycles.
For this thread I searched for LG to determine when they started making PC products. Wow, interesting history. Did you know they were Gold Star, and they make all kinds of appliances, and they were revolutionary in Korea? Actually, I came away impressed.
Also (for you NooNoo), when I googled I found Computers-Canada.com. Clicked the link to check their opinions and saw a striking similarity to WD!!
Perhaps it is time for that annual "Worst Hardware" survey.

You'd expect with a name like Lucky Goldstar that you'd be lucky if they worked , BUT they are infact very good

These (also Lite-on), when you can't run to 'plextor pricing', are definately a viable alternative ...

Tip: One little thing - 'firmware' - when they are the 'very newest model' be prepared to be updating, cheap also means untested (or not very well tested) so the very latest things can cause glitches which don't get spotted until a few have been sold .... but they seem to be 'on the ball' about posting updates (its worth considering though as often updating firmware may void any warranty !!!)

I thought LG was for "Life's Good" as they say in every LG appliance add I see on TV that ends with "LG... Life's Good".

I did google searches and it seems like that LG DVD writer is made by Hitachi, does anyone know if this is true and is Hitachi good?

I think bizarrely its the ther way around that LG make stuff for Hitachi, which model exactly?

LG Hitachi (LG got there letters first so I guess they are the boss!, there's a considerable amount of re-branding with cd/dvd stuff, lite-on make sony stuff for example)

Yes, LG is supposed to be the largest mfg of Cd drives around.
But, where did you get your info -ed?

Six years ago there were only a few mfg of CD drives.
That's why I say my part time job is just keeping up with this industry.

Ok just for you then .... Google search results on string 'Sony rebadged lite-on' - not exactly 'proof' (like in a Sony page saying 'we don't make this stuff' ) but near enough for me - honestly anyway they do !

Fundamentally though I think this re-branding stuff is 'pooh', that's why I don't like dell, comcrap or hpooey(though they are one & the same now), in fact everyone who makes 'boxes' & makes out they 'designed' them 'oh so well' (like yeah! they chucked in what was cheapest that'd sell!), whether its at component or system level, I think its downright dis-honest - a pet hate

You see almost as much rebadging in cdroms as you do VCRs. I always take a look on the drive itself.

I sell alot of LG burners. No problems. I like em.

My dad had a Goldstar microwave in the early 80's. It worked great for many years.

LG is pretty much all we use for our OEM systems (bout 2000 a month on average). They have about a 2% failure rate for us.

Great low cost, high quality product. The software that comes with them is usually a lite version of the software (burners now come with a "lite" version of nero, used to come with a "lite" version of ez cd) and sometimes the software does not support the burner out of the box. Latley this has not been an issue, but a year ago, when the burners were shipping with ez cd, you needed to update ez cd to the latest version to get it to recognise the drive.

We started using the dvd/cd burners in our builds as the standard drive about 4 months ago and so far I have not had a single problem with one that wasn't traced back to the customer's software terrorism.

one place i worked at sold a LOT of LG monitors, out of the several thousand we sold, only 3 ever came back over a 4 year period. i currently have an LG Flatron, and love it to pieces, beats the pants off a trinitron on IMHO

They've had a very good advertising campaign, and this is a common impression, carefully cultivated. As Goldstar they were a pretty ordinary OEM supplier whose gear appeared under better known names, and they also put out some cheap stuff under their own name.

They've certainly worked at their products, and although some of the consumer products are still not great, e.g. VCRs, I agree the computer gear seems to be quite good.

Speaking of Lite-on drives... I just found out that Dell has Lite-on DVD+R drives for $100.00 with free ground shipping. It sounds like a good deal to me. Check it out if you wish.
