Welcome to WinDrivers Anorakgirl!
Did the softpaq fix the standby problem?
Was it a problem to begin with?
You could try installing the latest mainboard drivers release.
Which Compaq is it?
Try this. too: Boot up without the adapter and then insert the USB adapter and tell us if the driver loads properly.

i haven't had the standby problem again since installing the softpaq, but i haven't really left my laptop alone for long yet either! i'm less bothered by that than having to reinstall it everytime anyway.
the p/n of the usb isdn adaptor is 321750-B31 if that is any help. my laptop isn't a compaq, its a higrade notino 2200. i think its quite an old isdn adaptor, the packaging says win 98, but on the compaq (hp) site there are updated drivers for win 2000.
i tried doing what you said and plugging it in after windows had rebooted, but it still didn't work and i had to reinstall it again! :(

My ... this is all most confus-ed
Errr umm you have no need for the softpaq - at all - that's just for compaq machines (with compaq tweaked bioses) - which Notino is it, exactly !?! 2200 I think refers to the cpu in it (its important we know excatly which machine, so we can diagnose its 'inards' (chipset) & direct you to appropriate patches - which is all I think you need).
tried doing what you said and plugging it in after windows had rebooted, but it still didn't work and i had to reinstall it again
Mmmm this why won't the drivers 'take correctly' business is a pain ... many usb devices exhibit this 'issue' , what you need to do is completely uninstall the device via device manager, Restart without the device present, add the drivers, reboot, then & only then connect it up - usually that does it (however without the right patches for usb & your chipset you might just go around & around).

well, i've tried every combination of unplugging, plugging in,installing and desinstalling drivers, and no joy :(
the softpaq does appear to have resolved the standby problem though!
The model number of my laptop is N222S, do you think I need a chipset patch then? How would I find this? I might contact Higrade, I didn't originally as I thought it was to do with the Compaq driver not the laptop.
Thanks for the help...

As usual compaq's site defeated me, so I can't say just what softpaq sp14918.exe does - it may very well have fixed your problem by 'good luck more than judgement', generally though a softpaq is for the computer itself not ancillary stuff like a modem
Support software is the collection of device drivers, configuration programs, flashable ROM images, utilities, agents, and more that is available to keep your computer performing at its best. Most support software from Compaq is packaged in a bundle called a "SoftPaq". For example, there is probably a SoftPaq containing the latest video driver for your computer. As new versions of software are released, you can come to these web pages to obtain the SoftPaqs to update your computer
from compaq's site.
I think you probably need a chipset patch & usb patches (but I don't know which, maybe both or maybe just usb) for exactly the same reason you downloaded the softpaq ! But I want to get you the right ones for sure, not by 'accident', any iddy biddy differences might cause you more problems later
So I went & toddled off to the highgrade site, fought my way past their ftp server (ftp://ftp.higrade.com/pub/notebook/n...indows%202000/), & lo no chipset patches in sight - but that's not to say there aren't any needed, so knowing this was an asus clone (I originally just googled N222S) I set off in search once more ... mmm nobody wants to tell me what chipset !
I think its a SiS 630S (but I found that on the specs for some taiwanese clone ! in whatever language they speak) - the sis site of course has its downloads section down , so I can't see for sure- but looking at other clone sites they don't have a chipset patch either - just device drivers for all the onboard bits - so I think after all that there ain't one ! or it could just lurk inside one of the service packs (from windows update) - which the usb ones are definately in (SP4 I think).
So do we have all the service packs for your w2k install present ? (I'm very confus-ed now because if you did you shouldn't have a standby problem - but maybe I assume that everyone patches at windows update?)
I think your driver is good (the modem works except you have to keep plugging it in again?) - the problems with the port & it recognising stuff at boot.
