    Which is better?

I am looking into building a spare pc and I have two types of mb/cpu lying around. I need to know which would give me a better output. Both the boards are similar spec but the CPUs are either a pentium 2 running at 350mhz or a celeron running at 500. Which would be better. It will be used for basic multimedia, web surfing office apps. Let me know what you think!

    Thanks.

Well, everyone out there will most likely correct my response BUT I will say it anywho...
From what I remember P2's operated on a bus of 100mhz (generally with 512k cache) while celerons were 66 (and 256 Cache)? You can easily tell either way by reading the side of the case of each processor it'll be like 350/512/100/v2.0 which is 350mhz, 512 cache, 100Mhz thingy, and 2.0v core...

Specifically between a 350 P2 and a Celeron 500... I'd most likely go with the P2 with the higher cache for faster schutff with multimedia... but I'm sure my analysis will be torn to shreds by someone else... but I'm LEARNING still.. :P

(and keep looking for a cheap 450 or 500 P2 to make the discussion moot)..

Actually () Arch, you remember correctly.
Although the Celeron number seems to indicate a faster speed, if you combine all the benefits of bus speed and cache (as Archie says) I would also go with the REAL Pentium.
Try them both for a while and tell us what you think.
    BTW
Both these CPU's are very overclockable.

If I remember correctly, not all the PII chips had a 100 MHz. bus. I think the PII 350 was the first one that did. Prior to that, they had a 66 MHz. bus.

    You are close Pin_head:
    From: http://wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk/foldoc/foldoc.cgi?Pentium+2

"The first Pentium II's produced were code named Klamath. They were manufactured using a 0.35 micron process and supported clock rates of 233, 266, 300 and 333 MHz at a bus speed of 66 MHz. Second generation Pentium II's, code named Deschutes, are made with a 0.25 micron process and support rates of 350, 400 and 450 MHz at a bus speed of 100 MHz."

    The clue:
there is no way you can divide 350 by 66x.
    Anywho, the whole point is:
    what is YOUR opinion???

You're right, but for all practical purposes here we are talking about a PII 350 which was the first of it's kind to hit 100 FSB...If it was a 333 it would change the whole ballgame...and of course that comparison would point recommendations to the Celeron…

I just figured the non-100Mhz P2 were classed as Celeron... that's just where I started getting into hardware more so I never really learned about them...

Yep I agree go with the P2 350 for the better performance. ( Oh and just for the record I THINK Celerons only have 128k cache so it's even worse.... )

As I am sitting here looking at a 370 celeron 500mhz, I can definately say the celeron only has 128k cache.

    P2 All the way baby!

I'll vote in thte p2 also.. that celeron you have MIGHT be good if you can get it to run at 100 bus... but that's a fast processor near the end of the line, so there is next to no hope for that.. P2 it is...
