    A recap:

The desired goal is to get the power settings to remain the same for all users that log in. Or at very least, create custom settings for all new users by copying a template profile to the default users profile, providing that these settings can be configured and saved to the default profile.

Again, the problem is that when different users log in, the power settings are unique to them, and can't be changed globally. The default settings from windows created for each new user is not desired, and can’t be changed by applying custom settings to a template profile then copying that profile to the default user profile, as described here: HOW TO: Create a Custom Default User Profile. As new users log in, all other custom settings are utilized, however power settings are the XP default, and not the custom settings that were copied to the default user profile.

The hardware profile only allows you to add, remove, and configure hardware for varying circumstances, i.e. dock/undock, serial connection/no connection. These settings are versatile only in that respect, but not with respect to a user setting, which is what power management appears to be. I just don't see how using different hardware profiles is the way to do it. Either one of two things has happened here. Either I just don’t understand what you are advising and need my hand held from start to finish , or you guys have misunderstood the issue…please advise either way…

Look at this for 2003 .... Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 324347

Is this want we want ? (not much good here as its XP)

Are we not 'at this' all back to front ?

I'd have thought the problem comes from the original installs, if ACPI is off in bios & any APM too, then when installed any XP setup, can't do its usual trick of over-riding bios ?!? not with a standard HAL ?, it can do that only when there is ACPI on ?(this is what is actually doing it, not xp or whatever, ACPI being Advanced Configuration and Power Interface ) ....

Power management features are of course directly tied to hardware, just like the 'soft off' feature on power buttons, if you stop that info being 'accessed' then surely it can't be used ....

So the long & the short of that would be to do the installs with a standard HAL. Then whatever 'timeout' is set in bios WILL stick (he says hopefully ....)

    Tis neither Ya.
Although we could all hold hands and sing "Power To The People" and declare Microsoft a monopoly, then take the power from them.
    The recap is correct!
The problem is we are searching for ways to retain PM settings.
To that end, both hardware and software are involved here and we are trying to find a way for both to get along:
"ACPI is an open industry specification that defines a flexible and extensible hardware interface for the motherboard. Software designers use this specification to integrate power-management features throughout a computer system, including hardware, the operating system, and programs. This integration enables Windows to determine which programs are active, and to handle all of the power-management resources for computer subsystems and peripherals."
Hence, we are now experimenting with Hardware Profiles as well as software based User Profiles. Seemingly, with no success.
If we check the MS White Paper on Windows Power Mangement:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/...inpowmgmt.mspx
we see the following goal for On Now:
"OnNow design ensures that PCs are instantly accessible to users when needed, while remaining silent and consuming the least possible power when not actively working."
Since it all starts with Bios implementation, and ends up being controlled by Windoze as the manager, sort of speak, we have a mine field of possibilities, including motherboard, ram, PSU (soft on/off), video card itself as well as it's software driver, the various other cards, plus actual software apps, all the way to the Win PM api itself.
Obviously this is a rather new and rapidly improving technology (ACPI, etc), which still has much room to grow and improve.
Power settings do not have to be user settings if set right first within bios.
Personally, I never use S3 unless it is a laptop.
I disable all PM opitons: no standby at all in anything.
Powering down of the hard drive always seemed to be problematic with older versions of Windows (98se, Me) and certain chipsets and motherboards.
Within Windows I only allow the monitor to turn off after a certain time period.
As we can see from the White Paper, MS acknowledges all the improvements, but also notes its dependence upon manufacturers and software developers. Hence, we can expect even more improvements in PM to come.
Until then we do what we are doing here and now: try to find a solution for ty that works.

Ok, call me a bold faced liar. I just started messing around with an XP box again, and created a new default user profile, and the power settings stuck. I think it was because this time I saved to a different power scheme, this time i used energy star and now that setting is used for all new users.

P.S. Anyone who actually does call me a bold faced liar will end up on the short list. Just so you know, that list is worse than the sh!t list...

So, we have a solution then??
Now, if only Ty909 would check back in.

    PS
Seems these lists @WD are getting out of hand.
I have one now, too....and I am on several
I think I'll just plead temporary insanity, and burn my list.
That being said, it's kind of fun being on yours, though.

Lucky for Ya_Know, his list is so short.
A database can be soo much work.
    BTW,
Is that where you've been the last couple days, creating your database?
