Norton AV 2004
Hi all, I have a customer that had NAV 2003 installed, then purchased and installed NAV 2004. After the install and reboot, and anytime the machine is booted, gets an internal error message pertaining to NAV 2004. Here is the GREAT response from Symantec in reguards to the error http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...av&svy=&csm=no
Has anyone run into this problem, and if so, how to fix it. Computer is a Compaq laptop running win me. There is no evidence of First Aid on the machine.
Get me a soldering iron and some duct tape, and I'll see what I can do.

I have not seen NAV 2004 yet.
Even my supplier doen't have it yet.
But:
Solution:
Symantec is investigating this problem. The cause is unknown, and there is no solution at this time. This document will be updated when new information becomes available or a solution is found.
Doesn't that say it all.
They are still guessing!!!
Symantec (Norton) used to be the best!!!
Going back to 1993 or so, and the original Norton Utilities (I actually used Norton to learn PC's), they were IMHO the best.
But, in the last two implementations, they have really gone downhill and it is a darn shame.
You just can't rely on anyone anymore.

I didn't read all the Norton post so excuse me if I repeat what you've already tried.
Un-install the product, reboot and run the Norton un-install tool from their website that deletes all the reg keys the un-install application failed to remove. Then reinstall once more.

Installed NAV 2004 instead of McAfee 8 2 days ago without a hitch.
I switched because McAfee suggested I sign up with Microsoft Passport to get updates, and I just won't do it.

Look on the Norton CD for the Symclean folder, then copy the Symclean Utility to your hard drive and run it. This removes virtually all registry entries, etc for all Symantec products, and usually permits a reinstallation that will work. Once or twice I have had to manually edit the registry to delete all the entries.

I've read that NAV 2004 has Product-Activation baggage included. Does anyone know if this is true ?

It works in a similar way to Microsoft activation by generating an installation key string which requires the input of a responding key string for the licence to become valid beyond the 30 day trial.

I guess I'll be sticking with the current version, or looking at a competitor.
I guess Symantec didn't learn from Intuit's woes...
Thanks for the info!

FYI for anyone planning on installing NAV 2004 Retail on WinXP there seems to be a problem with the Product Activation.
I cannot find a reference to it anywhere on the Symantec website, so it may be untrue. But the article is at:

News Clip: Symantec has decided to introduce product activation for all of its upcoming consumer products, starting with Norton Antivirus 2004.
Customers who do not activate the product within 15 days of installing it will be left with an application that does not work.
Symantec regional product manager Norman Kohlberger said the activation had been introduced as a response to the degree of piracy of Norton products. (More information)

So its not 30 day trial period after all but 15 days
Asked whether the company did not fear that there would be a backlash from users - as has happened with other products in the past- he replied: "Our tests found that there are minimal problems and our support calls actually decreased."

Just a thought but do they have any other Symantec applications installed?
One final option although drastic may be a clean install of the system as it could be a system file causing the problem.
