    thanks everybody for replying
so i choose the wrong setup, crap!
no biggie i can just load xp again

i want speed more than security (i keep good backups ) so raid 0 (stripe) looks like the way to go
but if one drive does fail cant i just load xp on a third drive and salvage the data?

and raid 0+1 looks interesting, will i get the speed from raid 0 but still have a mirrored setup? (i only have two 40 gig hds)

also i know with raid 1 (mirrored) i have 40 gigs of total storage, how much space will i have with raid 0 or raid 0+1?

    thanks everybody

If one drive fails in a striped set, no the data can not be retrieved, no matter what magic wand you use.

Yes you should yield some speed, yet have redundancy with 0+1, that was the point made above that got clouded by the rhetoric.

Lastly, RAID 1=total capacity of the smallest disk---with two 40's, you get 40 gig usable; RAID 0, the total of the smallest disk X 2---so with two 40 gig drives you would get 80. RAID 0+1 is just a mirror of the original RAID 0, so only the capacity of that set. In this case, if you had 4 40 gig drives, you would yield 80 gig usable.

When I refer to the smallest drive, what I mean is: lets say you want RAID 0 using a 20 gig and a 40 gig drive. The 40 gig can only offer 20 gig to the mirror(Edit: I meant to say stripe here, not mirror), where the rest of the space will be wasted. With this setup you would wind up with 40 gig total from the set. Same drive config in RAID 1 will only offer 20 gig. Hope that makes some sense of the matter for you…

With your setup you may only do raid 0 or raid 1. raid 0+1 requires 2 more hard drives.

Raid 0 - about a 20% increase in hard drive speed (note this will be above the slowest hard drive in the array). You should have near 80gb of space to work with after it is set up. There is no redundancy and if the stripe set is broken or if a drive goes bad you loose all data on the drives.

Raid 1 is a mirror which copies one drive exactily to the other drive for data redundancy. There may be a slight boost in read speed depending upon what sort of raid card you have. This set up will leave you with about 40gb of space.

Raid 0+1 will need 4 hard drives. It will write data across 2 drives for extra speed and will make an exact copy to the other 2 drives.

0+1 has been very popular in the high end stuff (RA8000,RA12000). It's the best of both worlds at only twice the price
