    only recognizes audio not data

My CDRW only wants to read audio tracks, it will not recognize a cdrom. Windows 98, the original computer had just a CDROm drive in it(drive D), a CDRW(drive G) was added as well a few years later and it worked fine for a long time. When the power outages hit the original CDROm drive went a someone unhooked it for me(they said it would strain the rest of the computer if i left it hooked up) and it worked for a while but now it wants to read everything as audio tracks. I have tried other cdroms i know that only have data on them and still.
I have tried several things and just can't get it to work, there is a PC Doctor that came on the computer that i can test it with and it stops the test and tells me to insert a data cd not a music cd. In device manager I have noticed that the name is slightly different, it should read ATAPI CD-R/RW but it seems the T and the P are replaced with characters I cannot recreate lol, i tried deleting it hoping it would fix it self on reboot but it didn't. I cannot try the drivers that came with the CDRW because it is on disk and it won't read disks lol, I am willing to reinstall windows but can't even do that because again it won't read disks.

Any ideas on what i can try or could it be something as simple as it still recognizing the other drive that was supposed to be unhooked.

    Thanks

it is a P111, 96 Mb, IBM aptiva 2171, it isn't that important as i have another computer but I am trying to learn with the old computer.

    Thanks

PS when i do put a cd in and try running it it shows as track 1 and so on, when i know for sure there is no audio on the disk, I burned it myself from the IBm site for updates for that model of computer.

See if the burner has a firmware update you can run from a floppy.

    CD Rom problem

    Hi

Does the CD read Data from DOS? Test this by creating a Win 98 Boot disk, from the Add/Remove Programs option in control Panel then Start Up Disk.

Boot from this and select CD-Rom Support. If it reads the cd ok, then its a driver / Windows Problem.

I have a similar thing a while back on 98 where my Samsung Drive was showing as "S M U G C"...I replaced the IDE cable with a standard 40 way, NOT the highspeed 80way that was fitted and it worked fine. Could also be drivers for the ATA Drive controller - download the latest versions for whichever chipset you have.

If it doesn't read it, then I'd replace the drive - they are cheap as hell at the mo anyhow.

    Hope this helps,

    Gav

Unfortunately, there is very little support, it was a cheap add on, I had had the regular CDROm and just wanted a burner more than anything. When I go to retail plus they don't even list it at all or anything in the way of support for it.

Thanks I will give that a try, I know they are fairly cheap now and that would probably be best as I was was considering adding more memory and joining it online with this computer but I have alot to learn before I get to that step lol.

    Thanks again.

    Why Retail Plus?
No matter how cheap it was there was a name on the box, right?
Last resort, pull it out of the pc and look at the label, it may be one of the remarked drives: sold by "anyone" but made by a "real" company if you know what I mean.
Also, did you try what Gav posted?
