dual booting

Anybody ever dual boot ME and 98 on the same hard drive.And if you have or know how how do you do it ie. what program you used or need and steps too do it thanks inadvance

You would need a boot manager to do that, and you would need to have two partitions, each partition is effectively hidden from the other by the boot manager as otherwise they will overwrite each other.

Boot managers are available from a number of sources, if you have Partition Magic for instance, that comes with a boot manager.

My question would be ... WHY?

If it runs under 98 it ought to run under ME no problem, the usual 'dual boot' senario is with a 9x type o/s and an NT baed one for compatibilaty reasons.

well I/ve have two programs that I have 1.partition magic 8 and 2. system commander 2000 starting to try to compare . do you have any knowledge of either system commander 2000 says it can be installed and used with a os already installed on a hard drive not sure though don't want to be one of though horror stories were all the work before goes down the crapperand I end up

.do you have a preference /why ? if you don't mind me asking and you answering if not thank any how for the begining advice.oh and is it better to put it on as a clean install or can you do it with a os already in place .

Nope, all the dual booting I have done I use os's that like been dual booted - never needed a program such as that... yet.

not to be a smart _ _ _ or anything but I know what the usual way of dual booting is I seen NT and other OS's together on the same computor and 2000 with 9x,linux base and other OS's together.I even have a nephew thats got XP and linux based dual boot but he wasn't sure of a 9x dual boot.He even found a site he sent me a little while ago. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard...dualboot98.htm
but its a little different approch I think not sure still studing all the options.Iam just thinking of ways to save both operating systems that I currenty have and the info on them with out making a ton of backup disc. for both wiping a hard drive clean then starting over a mannually putting the info back.but if I have to I have to.but I liked both OS's and still do I also still use them to play games and other stuff on on each one.I also have a 2000 rig being rebuilt.just trying to conserve and preserve what I've already have and maybe upgrade.but hate backing everything up wiping stuff clean and starting over cause that leads to

I answered this originally thinking, well I don't what I was thinking (I've slept since then !

) ... but I wasn't expecting this to be about getting two existing, pressumably on seperate disks, 9x operating systems, going together.

I get the 'I'm too lazy to sort two intalls out' line ... but I don't then get the references to re-installing etc, if there's a 2000 box coming 'soon' ... it strikes me as much simpler to get that dual booting with whatevers used least, & stop worrying about how to stop two 9x installs confusing the hell out of each other ? especially as it seems to be a matter of running a few games, which ought to run sucessfully under either current operating system or for that fact on our 'new' one ...

Because you've sure as hell confus-ed the sh!t outa me !

the very simplest answer would be to just plug in the appropriate drive each time (once the hardware's 'settled' you have to get that right whatever method), absolutely no s/w required, inelegant, yet effective ...

sorry about not posting back been kinda busy lately.its not just preserving two operating systems and upgrading.its also about creating a spare hard drive for storage purposes too store all the updates for 98/ME/maybe 2000 too.would included 95 and NT but their already dead well 95 is for sure.You do now Microsoft isgoing to kill off support and updates I think for 98/98SE/ME/and 2000 soon within a year if I remember right.one is the end of this year beinging of next.they are only going to support XP in about two years if I read that the life cycle of a operating systems on Microsofts web page right.

95 updates are still available for download, search for downloads for windows 95 at the downloads link from microsoft.
