Toshiba satellite 2060CDS Boot Problem

Hi,
I have a really big problem.
My satellite is not booting to the final destination i.e. it stops while booting. It may be a win98 problem, because I got a error message.
I tryed to use the toshiba recover cd but it will not start.
I have to tell that since 1999 the original cdrom (teak...) was damaged and I changed the CD unit to a suitable compac cdrom (it worked very well...). Now:
How can I fix the problem??
My recover cd is not starting, what solutions do you suggest? How can I start win98 again? I have no win98 cd because it was origninally preinstalled on the satellite.

Welcome to windrivers cthierfelder

Seems to me that without either a 98 cd or some working recovery cd's, we are left with just one option, fix your current install ! (though have a search about on the hard drive of your lappie - you may find the windows 'cabs', the files it installs from, 'lurking' somewhere on your machine which might be enough)

So what error messages are we getting ?

Btw what do you mean exactly by 'tryed to use the toshiba recover cd but it will not start' ... won't 'see' the recovery disk at all & fails with some error, or just tries to always boot from hard drive ?

It tries to boot always from hard disc which means that the cdrom is not start running.

Dependant on what's already set in bios, you may need to tell it to try & start from the cd first, not the hard drive ... if you feel confident change the boot order in bios to use cd only & turn any 'boot from other device' options off to force it to start with the recovery cd's ...

Could you tell me (for dummies) how I can get into the bios. I tried it already but did not succeed (probably I use the wrong key at the wrong time??)

You are welcome.

I think on tosh lappies, to get to bios its f1, it might be 'del' though ... Try as soon as it comes on - press lots of times !!!

to enter the bios, hold the esc key while booting. it will then give you the option of hitting f1 to enter the bios.

if you want to force a cd-rom boot without entering the bios, hold the "c" key while powering the unit on.

Hi you both,

Well, now I managed to get into the bios.
In the boot priority I can see the following order

CD-ROM->FDD-HDD

Which means, I guess, that the CD-rom should start the first, than floopy than hard disc.

The recover CD is starting when I see the "Toshiba in touch with tomorrow" screen but stops after some seconds. When I enter my pass word it starts again and stops again...

Than windows is starting ending up with an error message O6 2087:001D262. The only possibility is to restart and end up in the secure mode..

The second tip "starting with pressed C" is not working at all?

And now???
Any clue?

starting while holding "c" may only work for the origional internal toshiba cd-rom drives. I have never tested an older unit with anything except for the cd-roms that came with the units.

as for the error, what is the full error message? Is windows already installed? have you already installed software/drivers?

I guess, you are right with the "C" that's the proeblem..

The complete error message is:
an exceptional error O6 occured on adress 2087:001D262
you can type any key or
strg-alt-del to restart the computer.

(any key does not work. Restart is the only possibility ending up in the secure mode next time)

The whole computer was working with windows 98. All drivers were already installed. The cd was working as well.
In the device manager I cannot find any errors (strange,he)
There must be a trick to start a cd although the unit is not original.
Or not?
Is there a possibility to repair/reinstall something out of the secure mode from teh windows side?

My this recovery cd is helping 'muchly' ... not!

I'm still not certain whether this 'recovery cd' is actually attempting to start or not, I don't do that much work with lappies to say whether what you are telling me says the cd is trying & failing for whatever reason, or simply not reading at all, looking at the evidence so far I'd say the cd disk itself is damaged (scratched) ...

Is it possible at least to check this recovery cd elsewhere ? (I know you can't really use it - unless you happen to know someone with an identical lappie who wants it restoring !) - but I want to make sure that the cd itself is at least readable?

I can however diagnose your error a little (from the m$ kb)..

06: Invalid Opcode Fault
This error is returned if any one of the following conditions exists:
The processor tries to decode a bit pattern that does not correspond to any legal computer instruction.
The processor attempts to execute an instruction that contains invalid operands.
The processor attempts to execute a protected-mode instruction while running in virtual 8086 mode.
The processor tries to execute a LOCK prefix with an instruction that cannot be locked.

Which says to me some code is ammiss somewhere's, with windows sadly that could be pretty much anything ! at least however it says not hardware which is good

Let's try some 'simple' stuff.

Start in Safe mode (what you are calling 'secure' mode) & run a scandisk on your hard drive (your error might just be a corrupt file) also while you are there run sfc (system file checker) & see what that throws up. If you have any anti-virus (that will run in safe mode-not all will, but most) try that too ...
