    XP / W98 / W95 Problem

I am trying to network a Windows XP PRO machine with a Windows 98SE machine and a Windows 95 machine.

Each machine has a fixed IP because the XP machine shares it's internet connection. (Both 98SE and 95 can access the internet through the XP PRO machine without any trouble)

I use Zonealarm at present as the firewall.

The problem is with the W98SE and W95 machines accessing files on the XP PRO machine.

If I go into Network Neighborhood I can see the XP PRO machine. I can also see the folders etc being shared. The problem is when I double click on any shared folder I get an error message.

The W98SE machine 'Not enough memory is available. Quit some programs' and the W95 machine says 'An extended error has occured'

Any advice greatly appreciated as I have never seen these errors before!

I'm not sure if it is causing the error but you need to create an account (username and password) on the xp machine grant privelages to the shares for that account and then use that account to logon to the 98 and 95 machines. It would not suprise me if this fixed your issue. Cheers.

Thanks for the quick reply Gollo.

I am not sure quite what you mean but...........

The windows 98SE machine logs on as QIFA.

Do I set up an account on the XP PRO machine through Control Panel / User Accounts called QIFA and set administrator access?

I say this because that is what I have tried but XP PRO just boots up inviting me to log in as different users.

I still get the memory error from the 98SE machine.

    Can you confirm?

    Thanks

    To add some fiurther information.
I have added a laptop with XP PRO to the network and this suffers exactly the same problem when connecting to my main XP PRO machine. The laptop can see the shared folders but when clicking it says there is not enough server memory!

Yes you have to create the accounts and they must have passwords... to kill the optional logins on the welcome, change the way that windows xp logs on.

Has ZA been set to trust the network 192.168.0.x ?
Is is ZA pro with privacy?

    Thanks NooNoo.

Under XP PRO I have set-up an admin account called QIFA and given it a password.

On the W98SE machine I log in as QIFA and type the same password.

I still get the memory error.

I am currently using Zonealarm (NOT PRO) and yes the IP of the W98SE machine is in the trusted zone.

    Any other ideas?

Well let's look at the obvious then. How much memory does the xp machine have and what programs are running?

    Machine is as follows:

Midi Tower ATX Case – 300 watt PSU
Asus P4SX8-X Intel Pentium 4 Motherboard (latest BIOS)
    3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor
    512MB PC2700 Crucial DRAM Memory
    3 ½” 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive
120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9 UDMA Hard Disk Drive
    Sony 48x24x48x16 DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
32MB ATI Radeon 7500 AGP Graphics Card
Dynamode Internal PCI ADSL Broadband Modem
    56K V92 Internal Hardware Modem
    On-Board 10/100 Fast Ethernet
    On-Board 6 Channel Sound
    On-board USB1.1 and USB2.0
    Microsoft Windows XP PRO

I have also added a D-Link 538TX Network card in case it is the on-board NIC that is the problem to no avail.

Programs running in the background are:

    Norton Antivirus 2002
    Zonealarm
    ADSL Connection Monitor
    Winfax 10 fax monitor

I have used msconfig to stop all programs (except Norton ans Zonealarm) but I still get the memory errors.

    Thanks once again.

Have you tried accessing files with ZA turned off?
Also, what type of file sharing is set up on the XP Pro machine? Simple File Sharing or Advanced?
Is the built in firewall on or off?

Yes I have tried to access the files with Zonealarm off.

The built in XP PRO firewall is off.

Simple file sharing is currently set-up. I am not sure how to do advanced.

To enable advanced networking you have to go to Tools, Options (while in windows explorer or my computer), Settings (it's the second tab. I can't remember what it is right off the top of my head) and it's the last option in the list. Untick the use simple file sharing and then clik ok. Right clik on your share and go to shareing and security and you'll see the difference.

One thing you might try is removing the shares and then adding them again. Might work...

point to note is that zone alarm 'normal' isn't designed for this, neither is norton, both are for single pc only

A question rather than anything to add to the thread

Is this the right way around to do stuff folks ? .... generally where I've had IIS working, then want to 'extend' to include a 'normal network' with file sharing & the like, it never works first time ! ... so what I've always found simplest is to get sharing working first before any IIS ... or am I just confus-ed again?

    A question now though !

How is this wired ? ... I pressume we just have a hub somewhere? Would the word 'router' not be a star idea at this point ? Or is that money we don't have, as I see that'll mean we want a new adsl modem too ?
