    Get a MAC address in DOS

    Just a quick question - I've got about 20 new PCs coming in and need the MAC address off them without installing an OS. I'm intending to make a bootable CD with this program on it and just run it on startup

    nbmac.exe has been mentioned a few times but I can't seem to find any details on it.

    Any ideas? - like I said I can't boot into an OS on the local HDD.


    Anyone know of a little program that will give me the MAC address in DOS?

    If you have a managed switch that could be a way without any proggie, just look at the MAC recorded for the port you plug the PC in. But may I ask why you need it before installing the OS? It's much easier after installingwith almost any audit software, and the OS doesn't really care.

    The PCs have to be setup by users on location and won't be in the workshop more than a hour or so. All we're doing is a quick inventory

    Grab a copy of msd.exe from a dos 6.22 diskette
    load it, run it. Click network - Net01 ID: is the mac addy.

    found you can also do it with a bootable knoppix CD, NooNoo's idea is far faster though!

    Just noticed on my Gigabyte GA8IPE1000 motherboard, if you go into the BIOS setup and press F9 you get stats, including MAC address.

    Well that's handy for you ... but I just had a quick look at a few different bioses here & no such feature , so MSD for me next time, ta! , even though strictly speaking you did install an o/s - on the floppy, though the question is kind of confus-ed
