    Question O/S boot probs!

My Windows 98 PC is having dificulty booting. It gets as far as the blue screen, before all the Icons and task bar come up, but just sits there. The mouse moves, and if you check task manager the only process running is MDM! This occurs in both normal and safe mode.

    Any ideas please?

when it does boot up are there any problems in device manager. Also any Nic adapters or modems that are not used but still there. Also any duplicate entries in device manager.

I am assuming it does eventually boot. Also how about defrag?

I don't think this does look to boot ... not to windoze ... but can we get to c:\> (choose safemode command prompt) ?

MDM (Machine Debug Manager). MDM is part of office, 'generally !' & is called as a part of 'Runservices' from the 98 registry.

So not withstanding that .... Since this is 98 , then perhaps try an 'over the top' install of it ?

Boot from your windows cd & re-run setup ... because of the way 98 installs this is a fairly pain free method as it leaves your installed proggies intact along with your data ... it also 'zaps' any service packs & updates (which you can fix by visiting windows update - unless you've changed something all those should have been stored locally, so the visit to windows update will only be as long as it takes to re-install, all the downloads already being locally available).

Or if we can get to a 'c' prompt ... then we can fix this the hard way
