    dial up networking went away

I just put in a new motherboard and reloaded windows XP.
I had been running on it for about a week no errors.
I adjusted the fsb from 166 to 200.
I booted into xp and got an error message that it had to load a backup
    copy of my register.
Everything seemed ok but I noticed when I checked my network connections my dial up connection was gone.

I was going to add it again manually, but in going through the wizard it dialed out and connected for me but there was no connection showing in network places.
When I go throught the wizard I have no option to make another dial up connection. I have the option to use a msn connection .

I can get on the internet but I can't make another dial up network connection.
I ran a restore to an earlier point but no luck.

Oh yea, I changed the fsb back to where it was before this happened.

I looked at microsoft knowledge and didn't see anything to help.
    Any suggestions ??

Mother board is asus 17n8x-x xp2500

Uninstall the modem - preferably remove modem. Run SFC /scannow then reinstall modem with updated drivers.

are you having the same sorta problem this guy in this other thread is describing.

I would say reinstall XP Service Pack 1, because it sounds like what you might get when someone does a system restore to a point previous to when service pack 1 was installed. (where you are not seeing network connections)

As linked in that other thread, see this mskb article.

    hey,
That sounds exactly like the problem that im having. THANKS!
It shows up in device manager ok. But when I look in network places there are no other dial up icons available. And when I try to add a network place the options are greyed out. However then it does dial my dial up network and I connect.

And it did happen after I did a restore. I didn't think to mentions that I did'nt think that was a problem.

I have a dsl modem that connects like a dial up so I will just download sp1 or reload it.

Hey Thanks you guys!! You all are great and have saved me a bunch of time and headaches.... I appreciat it..

    Hey,
I had downloaded sp1. Can I just reload it from my disk or do I need to download it again from microsoft ?
And what do I need to do to reload it. I see the directory that sp1 is in.
I can do it either way but doing it from my drive would be a bit faster..

I do believe craigmodius has most likely nailed the cause of the problem. But, I would also suggest running Ad Aware or Spybot. I just finished removing 3 different porn dialers from a computer, and all the conflicts caused a similar prblem to the one you described. Ah, the joys of drive-by downloads.

    Well, that didn't fix it.
I tried what NOO NOO said first.
THen I tried the registry hack from the link craig sent me.
Then I unistalled service pack one.
I had downloaded service pack one and was in the process of the install when my system got rebooted by my daughter when I stepped away.

So, I have a mess now. It won't even go into safe mode or I can go to a "last know restore point.

I'll just start reloading windows from scratch.

But thanks for the help. I thought this one was figured out.....

    Thanks again

Just install inplace... and then apply sp1 and the other hotfixes.
