xp network place connection
hi,
i'm just wondering how come some of our computers running winxp, keeps on disconnecting from the LAN(win2000 server). All nic drivers are ok, it's just that when you first login, lan connection to shared folder is ok, but after a while(no specific duration) when we look back at the shared folder on windows explorer, we can't connect. and the search takes very long, before it says network not available. but upon checking other computers, the others can connect to the same shared folder. these happens at random to all computers.
note that all computers access the shared folder from the server only.
thanks

sounds like The lan connection has gone into sleep mode..........make sure wake on lan is switched on so that users can wake up a remote system....or turn power management off or adjust the settings,
In the properties of your network card in the device manger you have the option under power mangement to un tick the "allow the computer to switch off this device to save power"
and tick " Allow this device to bring computer out of standby"
there was another way via the control panel i think but with my belly full of KFC I can't think of it at the moment...or maybe that was it...bah more chicken needed

yes I was serious
If you switch the wake on lan in the bios on and do all that you shouldn't need to restart
and my avatar is great isn't she...She comes in Purple and Green and all different poses including a fab Bum shot which i use on another forum...it's an old shot of Leann Tweeden

Err is this not more likely something like netbeui failing or whatever ?
Knowing 'what kind of network' & thus all about dhcp & dns issues we are likely to encounter, would have been where I started looking ... they all connect in the first place ? then disconnect later or show they've lost the mapping ?

sorry for the late reply,
confused:

yup, just as I've mentioned this just happens at random, sometimes it happens, sometimes not. No Netbui installed.
m still confused???
Mayet, yup Cussler is the best for me, I've read all of his books, my sister was even a character extra on Atlantis Found named Evie, i'm finishing Trojan Odessey now, great!!! and I've heard they have plans to make it a movie.

Geezer
If 'search for computers' has gone 'screwey' (here it won't find other connected machines) then whatever is supposed to be 'finding them' isn't ! ... be that netbeui, wins, host files or dns (whatever the hell you use) ... at the risk of 'banging on' can you give me some clues?
This kb may/may not apply Mapped Drive Connection to Network Share May Be Lost 297684 too. (at least maybe think about changing the default time out & see if that makes a difference, here I don't know whether the machines are routinely on/off to see if the time out is it).
