I've seen that done before. I've also seen people plug the power lead for the front LED display (you know the displays that would either show a number, or just say HI) into the SPID in......lots of melted plastic insulation.

I had someone plug one of those onto the digital out pins of their CD-ROM - yep, melted plastic insulation & it didn't work no more...
