    date and time loss

    compaq pc pentium 2 windows 98se; time and date keep changing; many times to jan, 1980 12 am sonetimes i loose a couple of hours; what is causing it; Battery on motherboard?

    Exactly. Change the battery on the board. Could possibly be a heat/fan issue. Make sure everything spins.

    If that doesn't work run a virus scanner through.

    the bios date starts after Jan 4 1980 so the bios is losing that info and starting it again. Could be the battery most likely but may need updated bios or as I said some Virii can do this but its more rare...The Y2K bug was one example

    As spelling mod ... Viruses - there's Platipi (though I only know one ) but no 'virii', y2k bug 'madness' was about registers in legacy kit not having enough digits, so when it 'rolled over' all the dates were gonna be wrong & we were gonna get armagedon ! ... shows what computer 'experts' know doesn't it

    Speaking of which ... yeah I'm fairly convinced its the battery not taking charge too, try replacing it, though there's still possibility that your motherboard isn't doing its job & charging it, for $3 I'm putting a new battery in to see !
