date and time loss
compaq pc pentium 2 windows 98se; time and date keep changing; many times to jan, 1980 12 am sonetimes i loose a couple of hours; what is causing it; Battery on motherboard?

Exactly. Change the battery on the board. Could possibly be a heat/fan issue. Make sure everything spins.

If that doesn't work run a virus scanner through.
the bios date starts after Jan 4 1980 so the bios is losing that info and starting it again. Could be the battery most likely but may need updated bios or as I said some Virii can do this but its more rare...The Y2K bug was one example
