    Update: I did an 'upgrade' from W2K SP4 to W2K SP4 using a slipstreamed CD, and the scanner now works. Don't ask me what happened, but Windows must have gotten corrupted.....

    problem solved

    I figured it out, this is what I did.
    system>
    device manager>
    right click epson scan(should have a yellow question mark on it)
    update driver...
    done, problem solved.

    I know what the problem was

    "When I tried to scan a document, I got a dialog box saying that "Epson Scan cannot be started. Please use the troubleshooting wizard..." I sometimes get another dialog box saying that the scanner could be in use, and to close the other application."

    After going through a bunch of reinstalls and head scratching I tried this solution and it worked straight away.
