Burning a serial number into the CMOS..
I'm looking for a way to put in a serial number , of my choosing into the CMOS.
My client has software, that can keep an inventory of all his machines from the server, and does this by having a serial number from each client that it gets from the BIOS. It also give him all the hardware info about the machine as well.
Does anyone know how this can be done?
It would be on an Award Bios
(current versions).

You would probably need an EPROM burner and would have to add entries in the comment area of the CMOS code. I have had VERY little luck editing CMOS programs in the buffer of a programmer (I always keep a backup of the original program on the hard drive in case I completely bork the alteration).
If you've got the code-hacking touch, more power to you

I was talking with our Mobo manufacturer and they are calling overseas about some way to edit the DMI on the chip. So I'm hoping they give me good news.

DMI - desktop management interface I think is what that stands for - anyway, it's good stuff - can keep a whole inventory of a system in there...part of CMOS I suppose. There are a few DMI editors out there, most I have found are commercial product though...no shareware stuff (unless provided by mobo manufacturer)
