    Angry Driver6.cab Problem

    I think, recently my computer may have had a virus, infact several . I ran several virus scans, and believe me, there were many to be deleted. I deleted all the viruses that I could...but the viruses had interfered, with many of the Systems Driver files.

    At first, I was unable to access my computer, because of a Rundll error. Everytime I tried to close the dialog box, the computer froze, which forced me to restart the computer (if I was able to) or, turn the computer off at the power switch.

    This is what the error looked like:

    "Rundll has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL.
    Rundll will now close.
    If you continue to experience problems,
    try restarting your computer."

    Along with this error message, there were another two that followed, here is what they looked like:

    "An error ocurred reading the startup configuration file. Please contact your system administrator.
    SyntaxError: illegal character" (illegal characters)

    .....So, I tried restarting my computer, but this didn't help..until after a while of trying, I managed to access my computer, although the error message still appeared, I could close it, with no problems.

    Trouble was, the viruses had corrupted my:

    Display Drivers-I managed to re-install my NVIDIA Drivers, and that solved the problem (for now).
    Sound Drivers-SB Live! Missing cab file (DRIVER6.CAB)-I have tried searching for it on the Windows ME disk, or what I think is the right disk, infact, I have tried every disk I own, but, still no trace of the file.
    Printer Drivers-Printer installs, but says that there is no default printer.
    I went into the Printer properties and found that the printer was set as default, as a result, I cannot print out documents....

    I also recieve another error message:

    "Rundll has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL.
    Rundll will now close.
    If you continue to experience problems,
    try restarting your computer."

    But this error message will not resolve itself..

    :::::!!!!PLEASE HELP!!!!!:::::

    I know the best option to take is to re-install the Windows ME OS, but that isn't really an option, quite frankly, I don't have the resources to beable to copy the essential files I need, like, documents etc...And I may risk copying a corrupt or virus infected file, and re-installing it back onto the computer...

    Welcome to Windrivers

    You will find CAB6 on the cd marked Microsoft WINDOWS ME.

    If you have a Compaq or HP it will be part of the restore CD set.

    I have tried. You see, this isn't a newly bought ccomputer, more of a second-hand one....And I am not completely sure if all off the discs are here for the computer..

    Here are the discs I have tried to locate DRIVER6.CAB on:

    Operating System Backup CD Version 'ME'
    System CD

    None, seem to have the DRIVER6.CAB file on them...

    Probably the files you want are 'inside' this disk marked "Operating System Backup CD Version 'ME' "...

    This isn't uncommon - OEM manufacturers often supply machines not with a windows CD but with a restore disk which has an 'image' of the hard disk as it was originally installed ...

    Here I think I might back up the documents etc ('infected' or not) & then use the restore cd to start again, that should be able to restore the pc 'out of the box' (make sure before you do you note your windows serial number - you might need to ask how )... then when its all 'go' with AV etc, clean your docs & add back...

    This'd all depend on how sure though you are as to exactly what is on these 'uncertain' disks

    Also, make sure to disable System Restore. I have had viruses lurk in there waiting for a new opportunity to strike!

    Once you do that, you can always rescan at the "Housecall" site.

    The original location for Win9x files from OEMs was c:\windows\options\cabs See if you have a cabs folder.

    Also, I found a MS KB article that covers your mmsystem.dll error.
