CD Stuck In CDROM Tray...
Hey Gang,
Well, wouldn't you know it. Just as I got one problem solved, another popped up.
I was doing a full system restore to my D drive using Norton Ghost. About 90% through on my first disk I heard a loud sound, I don't know if it was a thump or what but after I heard it, my disk stopped sending info to the drive.
My CDROM wouldn't open. When I tried an emergency open with a paperclip in the hole, it opened about a quarter of an inch. It was enough for me to see that the CD wasn't on the plate.
How can I get my CDROM to open?
Sony CDU5211 CDROM.
Thanks,
Orangeman

When it opens that 1/4 of an inch, do the following: PULLLL!!!! The emergency "open" does not start the motor sooooo: you have to do it manually.

Yes, but the cd isn't on the tray. I'm thinking that the top front part of the CD is lodged against the top front of the CDROM and the bottom back part of the CD is lodged against the back bottom of the CDROM. If that is the case I'll probably tear the CDROM cover off before I get at the CD....
BTW, how is this caused, magnetization, bad drive, what?

Take the drive out of the puter. Lightly smack it around ( to show it who's boss ), to reseat the cd on the tray. Listen for noises sounding like many broken pieces. The newer high speed drives will make a mess of a cracked or warped cd. Plug the power back in and try to open it.

Actually I discovered my own solution.(I know, always a risky proposition...)
There were four tabs on each corner of the drive. I pushed in each tab with a butter knife and that loosened the front of the case from the metal holder. Then when I did the paperclip trick again the CD came out.
One lost CD, one saved CDROM DRIVE....
Thanks,

Could have been worse. The disk coulda sploded. I've had that happen a few times. I had to laugh when I saw it on Mythbusters, because I'd already seen it with my own meaty eyes.

Mythbusters was great. I loved how they tried to get a high speed cdrom to spin to full speed in a machine that could not handle the information that fast.
I love exploding CD's. They are even more exciting then exploding mainboard caps.

Some real advice...Don't Pull!!!...Might shatter CD
It's not hard to open the CD-ROM...from the bottom...remove plastic front plate, undo four screws, pop off metal plater, unscrew PCB, remove PCB, remove top metal cover, get CD ...
If your worried about the CD-ROM warrenty...take to the pc shop from where you bought it and have them do it for ya...DON'T pay for it...faulty drive should be replaced.

Thanks Laser.
I already did your solution. Instead of four screws, mine had 4 tabs.
The other people were recomending that I pull it. That was the wrong advice. I would have broken the CDROM tray if I'd pulled.
Thanks for the help anyway,
