    XP home network question.

I have tried without any luck, to set up a small home network with 3 systems.the main system win XP the other 2 Win ME.
I am using a Lynksys BEFSR41 Cable /DSL 4 port router, using ethernet all around. Sharing the intenet works fine, but i would also like to be able to share files, and the printer conected to the XP box.
Can this be done without using the xp home networking wizard, because it does not work after several tries.
Where can i go for a more info on seting up a network under Win XP, because i know this can be a very detailed venture beyond the scope of this forum?
    Thanks for any help.

First off do you have netbios enabled on your tcp/ip protocol? Second you need to setup a user account on the xp machine and then use that one to login on all the machines. thirdly make sure that the client for windows networks and the microsoft file and printer sharing service is installed on all systems. Fourthly make sure that all machines are connected to the same workgroup and that they all have different computer names. Fifthly make sure that microsoft firewall is turned off on your lan connection (your router is doing this for you).

That should get you well on your way. For more detailed tutorials check out http://www.practicallynetworked.com/

Ok, havent posted in a while, but was looking for recommendations on personal firewalls. I know for a fact that the BEFSR41 does NOT have firewall capabilities...unless Linksys has started using the same name for two different routers. My dad got this router and since my box is on his network, I made sure of the situation.

I say again: CHECK YOUR SPECS!!!! The Linksys BEFSR41 DOES NOT have a firewall built in. It uses Network Address Translation(NAT) as its only security measure.

I found that you must enable the guest account in XP so that the Win98/ME machines can see it. This has worked for me in the past. Especially when printing to a shared printer on the XP box. Hope this helps

Guest account = security problems, either rename it or setup a new one.

I guess what I meant to say was to enable a guest acount with a different name, not THE guest account, Sorry 'bout that
