adsl / network query

bit of quick help please ,

monday sees the arrival of ADSL ,as the dial up has got slower and slower, thru a UK supplier called TISCALI ,,,

have 2 machines in the house , No1 is in my office , i used to use it a lot.
No 2 is my laptop , sat next to my chair ,,i use it all the time
I have modems and phone lines next to both machines. i set up a simple network ,through a 10/100 4 way hub and 2 cables.(hub sat next to machine upstairs), dropped a cable down to my lappy as there is no cd-rom , this is a quick way to load proggys,

tiscalli will suply me with a simple adsl modem.
the machine upstairs stays on all day/night whereas "her indoors" closes the lid on my laptop and moves it (to hoover)

talkin cost here ,,,,,and lack of wires,

do you reckon to buy a router/modem ,,,,,or simply put the modem in upstairs , and run 1x network cable to my lappy ,,,,,

are there any probs with modems having to be "reset" ,,,and me gettin out of my chair?


sounds simple ,,can u see any probs ??

Since you already have the hub, the simplest route would be to install a 1-port router between the adsl modem and the hub. Take a look here http://www.dslreports.com/faq/networking

thanks for your help ,,,in conversation with a friend he suggested leaving the modem upstairs and getting a wireless access point http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=14 @ £45.00 and a pcmia card (wireless) http://www.dlink.com/products/?model=DWL-AG650 @ £23.99 ...

run the modem , to the 4way hub , to the wireless point ,,,running a cable from the hub to the big machine and the wireless to the laptop.

as the mnodem is usb this cant be done ,,,,but moden (usb) to machine ,,then cat5 to wireless access point , then to pcmia card should work , with an outlay of £80.00 ,,,

any cheaper way ,,,,at least wireless. ?????

Sounds like your best route right there.

Set the modem up on the desktop system and enable ICS then run cat5 to the wireless and desktop from the hub and you're in business.

General rule of thumb for wireless: Disable ssid broadcast and enable mac filtering. This should be good enough for the average user. If you are really paranoid though you can enable wep but IMHO it just creates to much overhead.

Just a question here: If you're looking for "cheapest", why not ICS? You're already set up as a P2P, and unless I'm missing something, there would be no cost in material whatsover. So, modem upstairs, since it is on all the time. Have you ever considered this?

whilst u gurus are here , Question : in my network settings i have 1: LAN 2:1394 3: network bridge ,,

this is on both machines
the 1394 , is /does light up @400.0 mbts ,,,

i take it this is a high speed connection (not being used) ,,,,,can it be utilized ?

if not , should it be configured , and where does the bridge come in .


somebody tell me all i need is a 20ft 1394 lead ,,and i,m away?

Uninstall the bridge (it is not needed). The 1394 connection would be the firewire port. Yes you could plug in a firewire cable to another firewire port and it should work (anybody ever use it?). For the most part you can disable the 1394 device as windows will look for a connection on it and this can slow up login times by a hair.

After further review I defer Yeah it has it built in. This could be an option but just make sure that your isp supports the modem. Cheers.

You're still going to be limited by the MAX modem connection speed which would be set by your provider. Don't confuse the potential of an INTERNAL network connection with the limits set by your provider.

i understand that i am tied by the ISP , in my case it,s a 512k connection ,,,,,and nothing i do will speed this connection up. the company i am buying from will supply either an altatel or segam USB modem.
have just tried removing the bridge and the 1394 connections (disabled) on both machines and rebooted them , and lost connection.
on looking at the firewire i thought it might be a "neeter" setup . ie: smaller cable ......i know that i am still tied to my isps speed.

will endever to try the first idea ,,,,,,,usb modem 10/100 hub and go from there ....

when funds permit i will go for the wireless access point and pcmia wireless card.

this way my lappy will be mobile ,,,,without the "umbiblical" cord it has now
