adsl/network query 2
ok , i was in conversation with @@@@@@-@@ regarding adsl modems , and routers for use in the UK ,,,,a thought went thru my mind ,,,,due to the restrictions/limitations (ie: funds) that a "donkey" machine might be better.
i have a adsl conection ,(512k) (THAT IS SUPPLIED BY USB),,,main computer in office/spare room , and laptop sat in living room , ----watching "groundhog day" now ) ,,,,minimal wiring needed in living room (coz her indoors keeps pickin it up ,,,,to hoover) ,,,,,thought about the wireless route,,,and will setup a wireless network/pxmia cad when funds permit.
as of now ,,,,,big machine upstairs ,,,keeping her awaik ,,,,wired thru a 10/100 box,,,,and internet conection sharing
how about a donkey ,,,,,old p@@ 2 gig h/drive ,,,with a network card ,,,,,running 24/7 in a cupboard ,,,,,running 98 ,,,,,
and feeding the other two machines ,,,,as and when needed?
NO linux/redhat here ,,,just a normal old machine wired perminently to adsl ,,,thru a 10/100 box ,,,feedin that/when nessesarry?
the wiring is there there ,,,and i have a spare network cark /wire and a p@@@ donkey ,,,(holding the door open)
good - baD ANY THOUGHTS?

Thats what I did for the first year, then I got a router and so on, but the "donkey" got an upgrade to 2k3 and runs my web and ftp servers.
Ran like a champ with 2k pro on it. Blew one psu - dust in the fan clogged it. But otherwise the odd reboot to resync the modem when it gots its knickers in a twist.

cheers bev ,,,cost is at a premium ,,,,they supply a usb modem ,,,this setup at maplin looks ok A11AN this looks like it will do the job , 1 x usb conection ,,,to go in the machine upstairs , and 1x ethernet ,,,to go via cable to laptop ,,,,and then wireless added later ...£69.00 ,,,,
anyone in UK know of a cheaper adsl modem/router ,,,,????

well i have spent 3 days trying to set up a "second user" but working smc barricade modem router (7104 bra ?) ,,,,,tottaly "issed ,,,,,had it workin one night , after about 3 hrs ,,,,but forgot to save the settings to its flash.
am going down the road u said noo noo ,,am puttin together a donkey
spec
1 x very second hand tx chipset m/board ,,,bios flashed to take 32+g h/d and a amd k ? 350-400 ,,1 x second hand k summot 500 ,,1x bloody big h/sink
1 x (brand new) 16 speed cd rom ,,,,cost £2 ,,,,4 sticks of assorted car boot sale memory (32m) ,,,,£1 ,,,for 4 ,,,1x 4 meg v/card £1 .
i did a look for h/drives in my box and found an old seagate 2g ,,,,,trouble is its 3 gig (been used on summot with a 2 gig bios!!!!! ,,,and a network card from www.scan.co.uk £3.51 ,,,,
now i,ve got it workin from my lappy ,,,,with modem (usb) ,,,and it feeds my big machine in office ,,,,,and this "pile" (still need a case ---arn,t yellow pages good as stand-offs!!!)
so i have got to spend £11.00 on a usb card ,,,,,,,,then i can "BURY" this pile under the floor boards.,,,with the modem
so ,, i got it setup "as a donkey for less than £20.00 ,,,,,if the buggers had give me an "rj" modem , i could have done it for a £10.00
at the moment , every time i add a network card (realtex chipset ), it blows my ide settings out ,,,,,compatability mode ....revenge might be had back ,,,in the form of "LONG" ---6in nails ,,and a hammer thru the floorboards,,,,
and ps the "net"works good on an old isa "(3 connection type) d link 905 card ,,,,,,,must have had that 15 yrs !!!!

DOBBIN UPDATE
seeing how it is valantines day , i treated dobbin.
she now has USB ,,,i found a usb cord off an asus m/board that had 10 pins , mine only had 8 ,,,so i chopped the two blank pins off ,,,and it works , also found a 48 speed cd rom , and with the 128 meg memory it runs 98 very good.
have connected my usb modem to it , and it is now supplying feed to 2 computers as it is perminently on.
found another drive , a 2.5 gig seagate ,,and loaded with 98 i have 1.9g left ,,,,,so i now have a pagefile!!!!!!!!!!!!
tried most breads of linux and still cant find one that supports usb modem (out of the box),,,
unfortunatly this board does,nt look like it can see drives above 32g ,,,,
i will have to buy a cheap controller card,,,,,,,,car boot sale tommorrow?
