    Child Mode

    does anyone remember this with win 9x? where you wouldnt get any cd drive in windows and i think it would appeard to be in safemode all the time, i remember it was called child mode and you had to search the registry for "no ide" but i forget the rest of the solution. little help anyone?

    Before you check the registry, you look at autoexec.bat and config.sys. If the line in autoexec.bat with mscdex.exe appeared, you typed REM at the beginning of the line. You then looked in config.sys for the device driver for the cdrom (which had many names) and put REM in front of that also.

    If that didn't work.....

    NOIDE was the registry key you deleted if it appeared. If it didn't then you reloaded the motherboard drivers. If that didn't work you removed the ven key under enum for the pci ide controller (which took with it the child devices) and the mf key under enum.

    You then reloaded the motherboard drivers on reboot.
    Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
