    Win98se Shut-Down Problem

    Hey Gang,

I have a problem restarting Win98Se. Whenever I restart, the machine tries to do it but doesn't quite get there. It seems to hang on the very last step. I have to manually restart. When I do, no errors are found and it doesn't go into scandisk like it would after a bad shut down.

I've gone into the Win98 Help file and consulted Bootlog.txt and think I've located the problem. Three drivers fail to load. Here is the explanation from bootlog.txt:

    LoadFail = pnpdrvr.drv Failure code is 0002

    [0017CC7C] LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd

    [0017CDE6] INITCOMPLETEFAILED = SDVXD

The question is, how do I fix it? I've used System File Checker and replaced ndis2sup.vxd and that didn't work. I couldn't find the other two.

    Thanks,
    Orangeman

    Here's your 'errors' explained

I don't think any of those is 'critical' ... go uncheck all those things that are no doubt on your startup list 'knowing you' , with msconfig & work from there

    Thanks Guys,

When I reloaded Win98Se, I get a blue screen error message saying that two device driver files, Utelsm.vxd and Tela-Lit.vxd could not be found. It recommended that I run setup again and told me to press any key to continue.

I ran setup again and the same error came up.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Orangeman

    Hi Doc,

Its not a telepath, its an Aztech MDP 7800-U. Do you still want me to remove the modem?

    Thanks,

Well, I ran the updates that Garak suggested (shut down patch & >32gb disk support). Now I get a blue-screen during Windows setup saying:

"Invalid VXD Dynamic Link card from vpsysmgr (01)+00000008 + device 352B, service 4. Your Windows Configuration is invalid. Press Y to continue. or C to Cancel. If you continue your system could become unstable. Please run setup again."

The problem is that I have run setup again, repeatedly.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Orangeman

Yes punkinhead. Listen to people who know what they are talking about. You must have learned that, at least, from WinDrivers. But geesh, what the heck happened this time???
    PS
For what it's worth, reloading 98 takes preparation. In other words, you don't just do it like you're reloading AOL. There are five years worth of updates involved as well as drivers. There is a certain procedure. Why didn't you ask before you endeavored to go about this???

Aren't you the same guy who told me to pull my stuck CDROM tray out by the front? And if I did I would have broken the tray? and the right way to do it was to unscrew it from the four corners ??? (which I discovered myself)

Anyway, back to the problem at hand. I'm perfectly capable to loading the Windows operating system. I've reloaded Windows many times before over the years but this time something is not working.I don't know what happened this time. It appears I have a stuck or corrupted driver in the Windows Configuation file that won't come out.

Not fair! Yeah, I am the guy who said that. Why? Because I didn't know the CD ITSELF was caught up between the drawer and the frame. (How did you manage that by the way?). To me it sounded like you just didn't know how do "manually" pull out the drawer without power in an emergency situation. Can you blame me???? Anyway, you did good with that one: sometimes, you just have to be there...especially when trying to help you.
Being perfectly capable of reloading 98 as many times as you have is NOT exactly a sign of competence, BTW!!!!!
Now, do you want help? Do you want to learn? Or do you want to fight?????

You go Orange. Triple L (loser) contributes very little to these forums in the way of help. Oh, sure he has a very intelligent opinion on taxes, or something in the lounge, but just ignore him otherwise. He either welcomes you to Windrivers, like the old man at Wal-Mart, or he plays off someone else's post, like he's helping. And he is concerned with the magical? post number.

How that post helped you, I don't know. But maybe you could try starting Windows in safe mode. If that works, run msconfig, uncheck the "load startup group items", click apply, do not restart. Click on Start, Run, type regedit, click on edit, click on Find, type the name of the .vxd file and click on find. Delete any instance of it. Press F3 to find next. When finished with that .vxd, Start at the top of the chain and enter the next .vxd file and repeat. Reboot. Post your results or pm me.

Yeah mpcp, all I care about is post count. I don't know anything about PC's, hardware, software...or anything.
    PS
Don't PM him punkinhead, and definitely don't give him your address...because he will ask for it: he may just show up at your house and beat you up.....

    Hey Trip,

I think the point we're trying to make is that it doesn't help to be sarcastic when trying to help someone. However I'm not exactly a newbie to this forum and I suppose I have to accept a certain amount of ribbing, cajoling, etc/ If that is the price I have to pay to get help....And Trip, I don't think that last remark about him coming over to my house and beating me up, was exactly called for, do you?

That said, let me continue to the problem at hand.

I uninstalled the modem, no dice. I have haven't tried PC Physicians' solution but I will Yet. But I will.

However I did discover that I DO have a file called Vpsysmgr. Its located in C:\Windows\System32. What should I do with it?

Also noticed, I just loaded a video camera. Its not showing up in my device manager and its not showing up in safe mode, but I did install it because it works.

STOP!!!! Is this system running? Are you able to use it? How are you installing software but you get errors on a re-install?

could we please get an update on what issues you currently have on this machine??

    Sure, MPCP:

Basically everything seems to be running fine. Two issues still plague me. First computer won't restart by itself. It seems to want to restart but it won't close down completely.

Second, when I manually restart, I get the above error.

I've just discovered a few new things. When I click Standby, The computer shuts down. Second, I just tried to reinstall a joystick. When I tried, I got an error saying "You already have the Maximum number of controllers installed. To install this controller, you must remove a previously installed controller device"

Third, under Sound, Video & Game controlers I have listed

    Creative Soundblaster PCI 128
    Wave Device for Voice Modem

I should have a Legacy driver installed too and I should have a Creative Gameport Joystick as well under that heading.

    Hope this helps,

    Orangeman
