    Virtual PC 2004 Experiences

I've got the free trial from the MS website and have gotten the following to run on it:

    MS-DOS 6.22
    Windows For Workgroups 3.11
Win 95, 98 and Win ME
    Solaris 9(256 Colors only)
    College Linux v2.5(no sound)

Other than no sound in College linux all have ran pretty good(Windows ME hasn't ever crashed on it!). Has anyone else got other OSes to work? Experiences? I'm thinking about playing a trick and Switching to Full Screen mode in Windows For workgroups and bragging to my Tech Friends abut the advanced OS I run on my AMD 2 gigahertz computer

VMWare is a better peice of software as it supports more hardware options i.e. USB.
At the moment MS has just rebadged the Connectix Virtual PC package.

I've had redhat enterpise running and novell 6. But i have a spare hard disk for my company laptop so tend to use that. Had it running as a domain contoller with NT and 2003 active directory. All works. i turned it into a NAS box last weekend. I don't think i can turn it into a SAN :-)
I've just ebay'd an old server which should keep me going for a bit.

Besides better hardware support, VMWare seemed to offer better performance and options for me. I was able to run 2 Win2k servers, 2K pro and NT4 at the same time on a 600Mhz PIII w. 1G of RAM. Virtual PC 2004 seems to be dragging even with a single 2K server. On the same hardware.

I love VMWare. Great for testing. It does eat up resources, but consider you are running two systems off of one.

Still having some USB issues, but works good enough for me.

1st of all, MS did NOT simply 'rebadge' the Connectix version. They bought it out, and have made some MAJOR changes to it, and will continue to do so. The microsoft version is far more stable than the Connectix one ever was. (maybe you are using an older beta when it was still basically the connectix version- I am using the Official RTM (not a demo)).

I use it on one of our servers, running Win2K Server. I have an XP Pro desktop as well as a 98 that i use for test accounts- i can logon to our domain with out having to have a seperate test computer. its great for making MSI files with wininstall. I have only run into minor issues, mostly errors re: messenger, which we dont use anyway. I have also installed the server 2003 trial so i can use the management software that comes with server 2003 for viewing policies on my domain.

i have been very happy with it...

    Thumbs up

I've tried out the Virtual PC 45 day free version as well. It works with beos ver 3.0 from www.beosmax.org, win98se, win2kpro and mandrake on my toshiba p4 1.9ghz laptop with 768 mb ram and winxp home edition. Only issues I have is not all of my laptop's components are all properly identified by beos and mandrake, but oh well, runs very stable.

Sure, virtual PC will run other O/S's a little slower, but that's what happens when they want resources.
I give it 2 thumbs up!!

I have a PIII 900Mhz laptop that I am running it on, I have setup a 2003 DC, A 2003 Exchange server, a WINXP Pro client and a WIN98 client and had all running at the same time. It was a little slow, but it worked great. I tried installing Caldera Open Linux and Redhat 9.0 and always have problems with the refresh rates, but I have not really tried to figure those out either. The only thing that I wish was availiable was some way to change the hardware in it. I would love for it to have an Nvidia or ATI video card instead of the S3 one, and USB support would be nice. Overall I give it 2 thumbs up.
