    Welcome to Windrivers Patsy!

First of all, we need to find out where you are so we can give you good advice, so could you check the following for us and post the answers.

In my computer, does the cd rom icon appear?
In device manager (start, settings, control panel, system) does the cdrom appear under the heading cdroms?
    How old is the cdrom?
Is the computer a branded computer like hp or compaq?

OK, so windows has no record of a cdrom.

The next thing to try is getting your startup diskette and booting from that. Watch carefully as it loads each part, one of them will mention MSCDEX.exe - this will attempt to find your cdrom and load the drivers. If it says no devices found, you may have a hardware problem in that the cdrom is not functioning, or it has been disabled in setup.

It occurs to me that you mighn't know how to do this ...

You need to open bios (so probably press delete as it boots - goes beep - as fast as you can lots !) - you should get a very blue screen (this is bios - basic input output system - which is the machines inards before windows cuts in)
    So when here

press delete lots (it might be some other key esc or f1 are common too)
    then you want this page
(or similar) & choose whatever makes it start from cd first ...

Then get your windows cd in & try & start from that - if it 'goes' that says the cd is 'ok' if not then 'busted' ... don't go any further with this - this is just to test the unit is working - windows will be responsible for anything after that.

I suspect as well that Noo might have 'going-on-holiday- itis !' , she mentions mscdex (which is a cd driver loader for 95/98) but you have 98 se so if there are any references to that they don't want to be there - 98se doesn't or shouldn't have/need any cd rom drivers ...

    Right .... confus-ed-ness once again - I meant the startup cd ! ...

Its all very well testing it in dos - but that uses a generic cd driver which mightn't work with his cd rom ...

Okay it very well might - but the 'certain' way of testing a cd rom is booting with a bootable cd (like the original windows 98se install cd)

Apologies - we have a tendancy to digress here

Take your pick of methods to test your cd with ... either with a 98 startup floppy disk or if you can follow it my how to boot from your 98 windows cd instructions .. we just want to try the thing outside windows to make sure its ok before we look at anything else.

I'm constantly confus-ed so if anythings not clear feel free to ask

So we've decided that the cd can work ? , I need to know that one or other of the test methods worked - else I think your cd is 'dead'. If you look at the top picture I posted we have your cd showing up there ?

You don't need any cd drivers in 98se. I know you have a driver cd, but they aren't required, thay are only for earlier versions of windows.

You certainly have more problems then just a CD drive not being detected. So, do you have all the "driver" disks and the original 98CD? If so, boot up into safe mode and remove the following devices in Device Manager: IDE Controller\Intel Ultra ATA Controller (dual fifo) (It should say something to that effect). If it says Creative IDE, it means that the sound card has an ATAPI connection, but geesh, that would be a much older card than the one that should go into a system as "new" as yours seems to be. Then, scroll down to System Devices and remove Pnp Bios. What we need to do is allow windows to redetect all your hardware again and make the installation "better". Are not comfortable doing this sort of thing?
