Installing XP

I have a Medion Athlon 1600+ with XP Home Edition.
PC decided to shut down of own accrod last week and I have problems since. On booting up i get the message "Missing or corrupt Ntfs.sys". Managed to get it to start in safe mode with command prompt once. Was then able to follow instuctions from Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 822800 and get the ntfs.sys set to old.
Pc worked fine for a while but as I was starting to back data up it crashed again. Now unable to get pc to start in any mode. Have tried booting from cd-rom but get various errors from corrupt ntfs.sys to unable to load setupdd.sys because of error code 7. Sometimes it goes past error code 7 to fail at ntfs.sys and sometimes it does not.
Unable to get to a C prompt generally. Only way i have managed to get a C prompt is by trying to boot from a Win98 recovery floppy and then select the "no" option which leaves me at C prompt. Problem is that I seem to be stuck in RECOVER part of C drive. Unable to view anything else. Only option I have is to run RETTEN.EXE to recover but I know this will wipe my C drive.
I just want to know if there is any way to get into the WINDOWS directory so that I can copy folders over to backup D drive (C and D are on same 80Gb harddisk split 40Gb each) or if there is any chance of recovering files if I have to run RETTEN.EXE and wipe C drive.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

First test your ram and hard drive then if you have a second Pc or know someone you could put that hard drive as slave and copy the files or also use ERD commander. It sounds as if there is something corrupting your os...

Already tried putting harddrive into my other pc. OS is Win98 and for some reason does not recognise the appearance of a slave drive. RAM appears to be fine.

You would have to put it in a win xp system or 2000 that is formated in ntfs

What's this "retten.exe" you keep refering to ...?

Methinks xp doesn't 'like' this machine (well specifically it doesn't like the acpi bios its finding) - Have a looksee at this

Some details on the machine & its history ought to make matters a little clearer ...

Retten.exe is stored in the recover directory of the partitioned C drive. By running this an XP cd rom is not needed. XP is reinstalled and drive C is formatted.

Gave up with old hard drvie and oredered a new Seagate 80Gb 7200. It's in the pc and have tried to install XP but I get

"File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Setup cannot continue. press any key to exit."

Just keeps getting better....

I have a Medion 1600+ with 512Mb RAM. Have inserted a new Seagate 80Gb 7200 hardrive to replace and old drive. Trying to install XP and am getting message -
"File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Setup cannot continue. press any key to exit."

Stumped and unsure how to get around it. Have tried pressing F7 to bypass BIOS ACPI settings but to no avail.

Finally someone has helped! Its just a shame it was your misfortune that has helped me out of my problem!

I also have a Medion PC i have the MT5 and have had exactly the same problem. I have tried to recover files but to no avail and i was sure it was the hard drive now it seems its the RAM. Letter is now on its way to Medion complaining about their systems they are selling as I have now found out I am not the only one!

Welcome to Windrivers Fox 2.

It is worth noting that you get what you pay for. Medion pcs (sold in the uk at least) are designed to be as cheap as possible and tend to use very cheap generic ram. If your Medion is still in warranty you will have to talk to the shop that sold it to you.
