    what os to choose

my girlfriends computer is running windows 98 and her brothers keep going on and deleteing her docs, mp3 etc. i am going to put on either windows 2000 or windows xp pro. i was wondering which would be the better choice, my goal is to set her account as admin privlages and her brothers to the point where he cannot delete any files? any ideas? the computer is used for web surfing and downloading mp3's and typing up homework.

What are the specs on the computer? That would make a big difference if I were going to choose between the 2.

Isn't there a way to set a password in the bios? Do you know how to get into your bios? My guess would be holding down Del while booting. Consult the mobo manual for more info.

Also, if you don't want to change OS's you can set the Win98 password by going into:

    My Computer>Control Panel>Passwords.

That way nobody could use the computer unless they knew the password. Nobody could reset it either without knowing the password. Maybe she could then start deleting her brothers' files.....

How computer savy are the brothers? The answer above is a quick and easy fix, but depending on the brother's skill level, they could easily circumvent it. If her computer has the power, either 2000 or XP Pro would be fine. I think you will find that most people on WinDrivers would opt for XP Pro (not home). Either one could give your girlfriend admin level and her brothers guest access. If you format the drive with NTFS, all the better.

The answer is XP! No users other than guests! And the rest...as Freddy says!!!

XP Pro..it is win2k with all the bells and whistles and is easy for home users to use and purtier than win2k

Win2k is still a great choice though..so you can really go for either....

I personally use win2k and wont put xp on my sys as yet...I love win2k but the only thing is the interface isnt as gooped up with eye candy

if you are using xp load it in ntfs though and not fat32
